Diesel sales in India fell for the second straight month in September as rains dampened demand and slowed industrial activity in some parts of the country, preliminary data of state-owned firms showed. While diesel sales by three state-owned fuel retailers fell year-on-year in the first half of September, petrol sales were up marginally. Consumption of diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country accounting for about two-fifths of the demand, fell 5.8 per cent to 2.72 million tonnes between September 1 and 15, compared to the year-ago period. Consumption had fallen by a similar proportion in the first half of August. Month-on-month sales were up 0.9 per cent, when compared with 2.7 million tonnes of diesel consumed in the first half of August.

Collections could go up further in the final tally as the numbers reflected calculations till 11.30 pm on September 15 — the last day for paying advance tax for the second quarter. «Tax collection is expected to increase when further information is received from banks on Monday,» an official said. The government will likely release the official data next week. Robust advance tax collections are an indicator of healthy corporate performance and an underlying strong economy. «Healthy advance tax numbers suggest that the economic growth momentum has continued in the second quarter, as suggested by various high frequency indicators,» said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at rating agency ICRA. «It is likely that the cumulative tax revenues will display a healthier trend at end September 2023, helping soften the rise in the fiscal deficit relative to the year-ago period,» she added. Of the total advance tax collected in the first two quarters of the fiscal, corporate tax accounted for ₹2.80 lakh crore and personal income tax for ₹74,481 crore, people cited above said.Advance tax collections for the first half of 2022-23 were ₹2.95 lakh crore. Advance tax collections for the first quarter of this fiscal stood at ₹1.16 lakh crore. Gross tax collections till September 15 this fiscal stood at ₹9.85 lakh crore.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to operate the Airport Express Line at a massive speed of 120 kilometres per hour (KMPH). “This historic increase in speed of India’s fastest Metro corridor gradually from 90 KMPH to 120 KMPH has been made possible by meticulous planning and time-bound implementation by DMRC’s engineers in consultation with a number of other government agencies and domain experts," DMRC said in a statement. To facilitate the movement of the trains at such a high speed, over 2.6 lakh tension clamps were replaced on the entire corridor.
