Karnataka: Sumalatha Ambareesh to join BJP, refrains from contesting Lok Sabha polls against Kumaraswamy
HD Kumaraswamy, Mandya’s incumbent MP Sumalatha Ambareesh, who won as an independent candidate in the 2019 general elections against his son Nikhil, announced on Wednesday that she would join the BJP and not contest the polls this time. Kumaraswamy is the NDA’s candidate from the constituency for the Lok Sabha polls, and the suspense over Sumalatha’s decision had kept the BJP-JDS coalition on tenterhooks, fearing that votes would be split in the region if she opted to contest independently. “I am not contesting the elections this year but this does not mean I am leaving Mandya. On the contrary you will see me, not as an independent but as someone with the backing of the rank and file of a party whose leader envisages a developed India by 2047,” she said. The BJP, she said, was a natural choice over the Congress, as the party had released funds amounting to around Rs 4000 crore for Mandya district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added, had always treated her with respect as well.

View: Same law for Aam, Neta
Arvind Kejriwal being remanded to ED custody, and earlier this week to judicial custody, till April 15, while AAP MP Sanjay Singh was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday after almost 6 months in jail, there is much political drama that has unfolded. Various factions are hurling allegations against each other, including that of misuse of enforcement agencies to intimidate opposition leaders. So, the common man may well end up asking: is the law different for politicians? With a record number of undertrials languishing in judicial custody, we witness an outcry when a politician is remanded to police or judicial custody. The law happens to be the same for all. An accused, in most cases, is remanded: When prosecution is able to demonstrate substantial evidence about his or her involvement in a criminal offence.

Women continue to get raw deal from parties in Kerala despite support for Women's Reservation Bill
elections. Celebrations over the passage of the landmark Bill were no less in Kerala, where over 1.40 crore voters are women and 50 per cent seats are reserved for them in local bodies. Although the Women's Reservation Bill would be implemented only after 2029 Lok Sabha polls, female politicians widely expected that they would get a remarkable representation in the candidates' list of the general elections. On the contrary, they continued to get a raw deal in the southern state from the parties that had waxed eloquent about the passage of the historic Bill. While the major fronts, the CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF, have given three and one seat respectively to women, the BJP-led NDA has set aside five seats for their female politicians in the upcoming LS polls.

Priyanka Gandhi accuses govt of 'pressuring' judiciary after electoral bonds judgment
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused the Centre of «pressuring» the judiciary after the Supreme Court struck down the electoral bonds scheme and wondered whether the Narendra Modi government does not approve of an independent and strong judiciary. The Congress general secretary's remarks come two days after Prime Minister Modi criticised the grand old party in reaction to more than 600 lawyers writing to the Chief Justice of India, alleging that a «vested interest group» is trying to put pressure on the judiciary and defame courts. Modi on Thursday said it was a «vintage Congress culture» to browbeat and bully others. In a post in Hindi on X, Priyanka Gandhi said, «The manner in which the judicial system is being pressured by getting letters written after seeing the layers of scams being exposed by a decision of the Supreme Court on electoral bonds (which the public is calling 'extortion racket'), and then the prime minister himself entering the arena and making negative comments on the judiciary, shows that there is something fishy.»

BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad backs letter by 600 lawyers to CJI against 'group trying to influence verdicts'
CJI) Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, expressing serious concerns against the actions of a specific interest group aiming to undermine the judiciary's integrity, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged that some people, including those who are close to the Congress establishment, have always taken a very grim view at times about the judiciary. Prasad said that the Indian judiciary is an extraordinary institution and has got every right to decide any issue in the way it wants. "...It is indeed saddening that some people, including those who are close to the Congress establishment, have always taken a very grim view at times about judiciary, depending upon what kind of judgments have come. These are the people who at one time talked of committed judiciary. These are people who at one time hailed the supersession of judges by the Congress government in the 1970s...Indian judiciary is an extraordinary institution. We are very proud of it," the BJP MP said.
