Karnataka government on Saturday formally launched 'Gruha Jyothi' scheme, one of the five poll guarantees of the Congress party, which promises to provide up to 200 units of free power to households in the state. Formally launching the scheme by handing over the «zero bill» to 10 people symbolically, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accusing the ruling Congress of «emptying» state coffers for selfish interests through populist announcements. With the launch of 'Gruha Jyothi', the state government has implemented three of the five poll guarantees so far, the other two being, 'Shakti', by providing free services for women in public transport buses, and 'Anna Bhagya' scheme — by payment of cash in lieu of the additional 5 kg rice to beneficiaries. Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has drawn up capital expenditure plans of around Rs 70,000 crore by 2030 to boost power generation capacity from 6,700 MW at present to 16,000 MW, its chairman R N Singh said on Friday. Adani Power, part of the Indian conglomerate Adani Group, reported an 83.26% rise in first-quarter profit on Thursday, boosted by a steep drop in its tax bill and a jump in collection of delayed payments. The company's consolidated net profit rose to 87.59 billion rupees ($1.06 billion) in the April-June quarter, from 47.80 billion rupees a year ago. That was mostly due to a near 96% drop in its tax bill and a near four-fold jump in delayed payments, including interest, from power distribution companies.

Torrent Power Ltd (TPL) has entered into an agreement with subsidiaries of Shapoorji Pallonji & Company Private Limited (SPCPL) for the supply of 132 MW solar power in Gujarat. The estimated project cost of the 132 MW project is Rs 700 crore, TPL said in a statement.
