Chinese leader Xi meets with US national security adviser Jake Sullivan in a bid to improve ties
Beijing, on a visit with the stated aim of keeping communications open between the two powers, as the relationship between China and the United States has become increasingly tense in recent years. Sullivan, on his first trip to China in his capacity as the main adviser to President Joe Biden on U.S. national security issues, has met with senior Chinese officials including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and a senior general of the Central Military Commission. China and the U.S. have become increasingly at odds over various issues, starting with a trade war dating back to 2018, and which now encompasses global security matters, such as China's claims over the South China Sea, and industrial policy on things like automobile and solar panel manufacturing. Sullivan's trip this week is meant to keep the tensions from growing further.

Renegotiating debt terms can lead to further economic instability: Sri Lankan foreign minister
Sri Lanka's Debt Sustainability Agreement, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry has said resuming negotiations with the IMF could jeopardise its next tranche due in December and subsequent disbursements from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The conditions for the Debt Sustainability Agreement (DSA) have now become part of the law and cannot be easily altered, Sabry said. He emphasised that renegotiating the deal could lead to further economic instability in the island nation, which is recovering from the worst-ever economic turmoil it suffered in 2022. Sri Lanka declared its first-ever sovereign default in mid-April 2022, having run out of its foreign exchange reserves. The halt to the debt services meant that the multilateral creditor nations and commercial lenders could not extend fresh financing to the country.

US Elections: Kamala Harris, Tim Walz will sit down for first major television interview of their presidential campaign
Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will sit down Thursday for their first major television interview of their presidential campaign as the duo travels in southeast Georgia on a bus tour. The interview with CNN's Dana Bash will give Harris a chance to quell criticism that she has eschewed uncontrolled environments, while also giving her a fresh platform to define her campaign and test her political mettle ahead of an upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump set for September 10. But it also carries risk as her team tries to build on momentum from the ticket shakeup following Joe Biden's exit and last week's Democratic National Convention. Joint interviews during an election year are a fixture in politics; Biden and Harris, Trump and Mike Pence, Barack Obama and Biden — all did them at a similar point in the race. The difference is those other candidates had all done solo interviews, too. Harris hasn't yet done an in-depth interview since she became her party's standard bearer five weeks ago, though she did sit for several while she was still Biden's running mate.

Kamala Harris scared to do an interview on her own: Donald Trump's election campaign
Donald Trump's election campaign took a jibe at Vice-President Kamala Harris ahead of her first joint interview with Tim Walz, her running mate, and said that she is scared to interview on her own. Notably, Harris agreed to a joint interview with Walz, who is her running mate for the elections, The Hill reported. Harris and Minnesota Governor Walz will participate in their first joint interview with CNN on Thursday. CNN's Dana Bash will conduct the interview, which is set to air at 9 pm EDT. Sharing a post on X, the Trump War Room said, «It's no coincidence that Kamala's first interview is scheduled for the Thursday night before Labor Day weekend. They already hope it gets lost — and it hasn't even aired yet.»

Amid cautious hiring, internship becomes mandatory and extended
companies are increasingly insisting that freshers undergo mandatory internships with them for an extended period before they make the final offers, delaying the hiring process that has just started seeing some activity after a washout year. Placement officers in several tier-1 and -2 engineering colleges that ET spoke to said internships, which used to be six months, have now been extended by another four-six months. “Employers are increasingly seeking fresh graduates with internship experience in AI/ML, data roles, model development and analytics,” said Munira Loliwala, vice president, strategy and growth, at staffing services firm TeamLease Digital. “The shortage of skilled entry-level talent has led companies to offer extended internships, enhancing the likelihood of hiring through management trainee programs later.”
