China manufacturing activity grows at highest rate in a year
Authorities have looked in recent months to revive confidence in the Chinese economy, grappling with a prolonged property sector crisis and now under increasing pressure from fresh trade tensions with the United States. The Purchasing Managers' Index — a key measure of industrial output — came in at 50.5 in March, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), above the 50-point mark that separates growth and contraction. The reading for March was up from February's 50.2, and the highest in twelve months. Manufacturing was boosted by workers' return to work after the traditional Spring Festival travel period in February and the fact that «enterprises' production and operating activities accelerated,» NBS statistician Zhao Qinghe said in a statement.

Trump says reciprocal tariffs will target all countries as India and world brace for 'Liberation Day'
Liberation Day, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the reciprocal tariffs he plans to unveil this week will apply to all nations, not just a select group of 10 to 15 countries with the largest trade imbalances. Trump has pledged to introduce a sweeping tariff plan on Wednesday, a move he has dubbed «Liberation Day.» He has already imposed tariffs on aluminum, steel, and automobiles, alongside heightened duties on all imports from China. «You'd start with all countries,» Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. «Essentially all of the countries that we're talking about.» White House economics adviser Kevin Hassett recently told Fox Business that the administration’s tariff focus would be on 10 to 15 nations with the most significant trade imbalances, though he did not specify which ones. Meanwhile, India is considering reducing or even eliminating customs duties on auto parts imported from the US, a government official told ET. The move comes as part of efforts to strengthen trade ties, with officials believing it would not significantly impact the domestic industry. Trump views tariffs as a means of shielding the domestic economy from unfair global competition and as leverage for negotiating better trade terms for the U.S.

'No need for Trump tariffs, trade pact talks on'
reciprocal tariffs, India has communicated to Washington that the focus of the trade relationship should be a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) to address any concerns over import duties, said people with knowledge of the matter. US officials who were in Delhi last week to negotiate the BTA told their Indian counterparts that the message would be conveyed to the White House as the final decision would be made there, the people told ET on condition of anonymity. Assistant US trade representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch was in India from March 26-29 to discuss the BTA. The joint statement issued on Saturday after the talks did not mention reciprocal tariffs.

Big support for Donald Trump: Jim Cramer shocks Wall Street with pro-tariff stance, slams free trade; ‘It’s cost us fortunes’
Host of CNBC's «Mad Money» took a clear stand against the idea, attributing the economic downfall of small towns throughout the United States to it. «I am for tariffs, plain and simple. I despise free trade,» Cramer insisted on an episode of his program, as quoted in a report by Bezinga. He continued on to say, «It's been embarrassing to our nation. It's cost us millions. Everyone takes advantage of us. There's just no limit to it.» Cramer's comments are opposite to the general assumption that free trade boosts economic growth and global cooperation. Instead, he had claimed that the focus on cheap imports has done harm to small towns.

India, Chile to focus on upgrading PTA to CEPA during President Boric’s visit next week
preferential trade agreement (PTA) into a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), making Chile the first Latin American country to have such a deal with New Delhi. Discussions on CEPA are expected to take place during Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font’s State Visit to India from April 1-5. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers, MPs, senior officials, business associations, media, and cultural representatives. The PTA between India and Chile was signed in 2006 and expanded in 2017. Officials are now looking at tariff and non-tariff barriers to boost trade between the two regions. The target is to double two-way commerce to $100 billion in the coming years. Key sectors for cooperation include automobiles, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. Chile is India’s fifth-largest trading partner in Latin America. From April to December in FY25, India’s exports to Chile amounted to $860.26 million, mainly consisting of pharmaceuticals and vehicles. Imports were $2.07 billion, with ores, slag, ash, and copper being the primary inbound shipments. Indian trade organizations have been actively engaging with Chile through business summits and trade fairs in sectors such as pharma, apparel, handicrafts, and chemicals. An Indian mining delegation also visited Chile in April 2024 to explore collaboration opportunities in the mining sector.

Trump says 'very angry, pissed off' with Putin
Trump said Sunday he was «very angry, pissed off» with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, NBC reported, marking a sharp change of tone as Washington seeks to end the war in Ukraine. NBC's Kristen Welker said Trump had called her to express his anger over Putin questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's future as a leader — something that Trump himself has done. Welker, on her NBC show «Meet The Press» on Sunday, quoted directly from an early-morning telephone conversation with the president. Trump said that «if Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia's fault» then he would impose «secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia.» Welker said Trump told her «I was very angry, pissed off» when Putin started making comments about Zelensky's credibility and talking about new leadership in Ukraine.

Trump threatens secondary tariffs on Russian oil if unable to make deal on Ukraine
secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, and they could start within a month if there is no ceasefire. Trump told NBC News he was angry and «pissed off» when Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's leadership, NBC reported. Trump told NBC News by phone that he planned to speak with Putin this week. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised repeatedly to end what he calls a «ridiculous» war in Ukraine, and he has focused heavily on the issue since taking office on January 20. Trump himself has called for new elections in Ukraine and falsely called Zelenskiy a dictator. Putin on Friday suggested Ukraine could be placed under a form of temporary administration to allow for new elections and the signature of key accords, which could effectively push out Zelenskiy.

Pete Hegseth's big praise for Japan in face of Chinese aggression and amid Trump tariff threat
Pete Hegseth called Japan on Sunday an «indispensable partner» in deterring growing Chinese assertiveness in the region and announced upgrading the US military command in Japan to a new «war-fighting headquarters.» Hegseth, who is on his first Asia trip with Japan as his second stop, also stressed the need for both countries to do more to accelerate the strengthening of their military capability as the region faces China's assertive military actions and a possible Taiwan emergency. «Japan is our indispensable partner in deterring Communist Chinese military aggression,» Hegseth said at the beginning of his talks with Japan's Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Tokyo. «The US is moving fast, as you know, to reestablish deterrence in this region and around the world.» His comments come as an assurance at a time when Japan has been worried about how US engagement in the region may change under President Donald Trump's «America First» policy, Japanese defence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity, citing protocol. Netanyahu says military pressure on Hamas working, 'cracks' emerging in negotiations
«We are negotiating under fire… We can see cracks beginning to appear» in what the group demanded in its negotiations, Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting. Netanyahu's remarks came as mediators — Egypt, Qatar, and the United States — continued efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. A senior Hamas official stated on Saturday that the group had approved a new ceasefire proposal put forward by mediators and urged Israel to support it. Netanyahu's office confirmed receipt of the proposal and said Israel had submitted a counterproposal.
