The planet needs solar power. Can we build it without harming nature?
But for a nation racing to adopt renewable energy, the land is prime for something else: solar panels. The sun shines strong, the terrain is flat and high-voltage transmission lines are in place from a decommissioned coal plant. Energy collected here could speed to major metropolitan regions across the West, part of a colossal wave of clean power needed to stave off the worst effects of global warming. Animals need humans to solve climate change. But they also need places to live. Loss of habitat is the top driver of a staggering global decline in biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth. The boom in solar power, set to be the fastest-growing energy source in the United States, is predicted to fence off millions of acres across the nation, blanketing them in rows of glassy squares.

What Indians on the immigration queue lost when the US border deal failed
green card backlogs. The Bill, if implemented, would have particularly helped Indians on K-1 fiancé/e and K-3 spouse visas, H-4 spouses and children of H1-B visa holders, individuals awaiting employment-based green cards, and those sponsored for family-based green cards waiting outside the US. For H-1B visa holders with approved I-140 petitions, the Bill aimed to simplify the employment authorization process for their spouses. Traditionally, H-4 visa holders undergo a cumbersome process to obtain an employment authorization document (EAD). The proposed Bill sought to eliminate this requirement, allowing H-4 spouses to work 'incident to status,' streamlining the process and removing bureaucratic hurdles.

Immigration reform in the US has always been tough, and rarely happens in election years
By Daniel Tichenor, University of Oregon Immigration is already a major polarizing issue in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico reached an all-time high in December 2023, and cities like New York and Chicago are struggling to provide housing and basic services for tens of thousands of migrants arriving from Texas. In early February 2024, a group of senators proposed new immigration legislation that would have slowed the migrant influx at the border. The bill would have made it harder for migrants to both apply for and receive asylum, which is the legal right to stay in the U.S. because of fear of persecution if they return back home. But the bill, like others proposed in recent years, quickly faltered after Republicans opposed it.

We stay engaged with Indian govt: US Deputy State Secretary on alleged Pannun killing plot
Richard Verma in Delhi on Tuesday said that America will stay engaged with the Indian government on the issue of the alleged bid to assassinate Khalistterrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States. «I know we raised our concerns with the Government of India. There is a committee of inquiry looking into the matter, and we will stay engaged with the government and look forward to their findings. And they've taken it very seriously, and we're grateful for that,» Verma said. He made the remarks at the event titled 'The Long View from DC: The India-US Partnership' hosted by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in Delhi. His statement comes after the US Justice Department unsealed an indictment against an Indian national for his alleged involvement in the foiled plot to assassinate Pannun.

Indian hotel industry revenue expected to grow 7-9 pc in FY25: ICRA
Indian hotel industry is expected to report a 7-9 per cent revenue growth in FY2025 with occupancy likely to be at decadal highs, ratings agency ICRA said on Tuesday. Sustenance of domestic leisure travel, demand from meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), including weddings and business travel despite a temporary lull during the election period are likely to drive demand in FY2025, ICRA said in a statement. Spiritual tourism and tier-II cities are also expected to contribute meaningfully in FY2025, it added. ICRA said domestic tourism has been the prime demand driver in FY2024 and is likely to remain so in the near-term. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTA) are yet to recover to pre-Covid levels and the improvement would depend on the global macroeconomic environment.
