China introduces revolutionary nuclear battery that lasts 50 years without charging
Betavolt, claims to have developed a groundbreaking battery that can power smartphones for an impressive 50 years without the need for charging. The nuclear battery, which has been hailed as the world's first miniaturized atomic energy system, uses 63 nuclear isotopes packed into a module smaller than a coin. The technology behind the battery involves converting the energy released by decaying isotopes into electricity. This concept was first explored in the 20th century and Betavolt has successfully realized it in their innovative product. The startup has already initiated pilot testing and plans to mass-produce the battery for commercial applications, such as smartphones and drones.

AIF Diktat: RBI may extend deadline for banks, DFIs
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to give some relief to mainstream banks and development financiers on downstream loan-linked Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) exposures, which they were required to either liquidate by later this week or totally provide for in compliance with the central bank’s December 19 prudential directive. Non-banking financial companies (NBFC), however, are unlikely to be provided any relief by the RBI, with industry sources saying the primary goal of the original directive was to de-risk AIF exposures of NBFCs with downstream loan relationships with AIF beneficiaries, and prevent potential evergreening of doubtful advances to struggling corporates. “The RBI is unlikely to provide NBFCs exemptions on compliance, but banks and other financial institutions are likely to get relief,” said a banking industry source close to the development. January 18 is the liquidation deadline for under-scanner AIF exposures by banks, NBFCs, and development financial institutions (DFI), which primarily advance funds to MSMEs. A spokesperson at the RBI did not respond to ET’s requests for comment. Data compiled by the capital-markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), showed that funds raised by AIFs have risen to Rs 3.74 lakh crore by the end of FY23, from Rs 2.30 lakh crore in FY20.

ED arrests former Punjab forest minister S S Dharamsot in money laundering case
Enforcement Directorate on Monday arrested Congress leader and former Punjab forest minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot under the anti-money laundering law in an investigation linked to an alleged forest scam in the state, official sources said. The agency took the 64-year-old politician into custody under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Jalandhar. The ED had raided the premises of Dharamsot, another forest minister of the state Sangat Singh Giljian, some forest department officials and others in November last year. The investigation pertains to charges of «bribery» in the state forest department against the issuance of permits for tree felling and for transfer/posting in the department, among other allegations. Dharamsot has been a five-time MLA and was also arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau last year in a case linked to alleged possession of disproportionate assets. He has represented the Nabha assembly seat while Giljian has been an MLA from the Urmar seat in Hoshiarpur district. The money laundering case, filed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, stems from an FIR of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau into alleged irregularities in the forest department and allegations of taking bribes by the ministers and officers concerned for issuing permits for felling of Khair trees, transfer/posting in the department, issuance of NOC from the department and purchase of tree guards.

Fed Tiptoes Toward Dialing Back Key Channel of Monetary Tightening
Though the Federal Reserve stopped raising interest rates last summer, it is quietly tightening monetary policy through another channel: shrinking its $7.7 trillion holdings of bonds and other assets by around $80 billion a month. Now that, too, may change. Fed officials are to start deliberations on slowing, though not ending, that so-called quantitative tightening as soon as their policy meeting this month.

What are the lessons learned from Alberta’s emergency power alert?
The emergency alert that Albertans received on Saturday night shows how much work is going to be needed to adapt to future demand according to Alberta’s utilities minister and electricity experts. The alert, issued by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), urged Albertans to reduce electricity usage to essentials only to prevent rotating outages. The alert came a few hours after AESO declared a grid alert due to extreme cold, high demand and low imports. On Sunday afternoon, AESO declared another grid alert for the third day in a row, asking Albertans to reduce electricity to essential use only.“We were concerned at one point that we were going to run out of emergency reserves and have to go to rotating outages,” said Leif Sollid communication manager for Alberta Electric System Operator. He said the last time Alberta saw rotating outages was during the floods of 2013.There was a significant drop in electricity demand almost immediately after the alert was issued.
