What they want: Biden and Xi are looking for clarity in an increasingly difficult relationship
Joe Biden and China's Xi Jinping have no shortage of difficult issues to discuss when they sit down for their first talks in a year, even if expectations are low that their meeting will lead to major breakthroughs. Each leader has clear objectives for the highly anticipated talks on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, a meeting that comes after what's been a fractious year for the world's two biggest economies. Both Biden and Xi are looking to bring a greater measure of stability to a relationship that is being defined by differences over export controls, tensions over Taiwan, the wars in the Middle East and Europe, and more. A look at what each president is hoping to achieve during their talks: WHAT BIDEN WANTS The White House has made clear that the U.S.-China relationship is beyond the days where a meeting ends with a long list of announcements and agreements. Instead, Biden comes to San Francisco focused on managing the countries' increasingly fierce economic competition and keeping open lines of communication to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to direct conflict between the two powers. Expect Biden to defend U.S. expansion of export controls on semiconductor chips.

Deepfakes reveal dark side of AI, call for stringent laws
Deepfakes, which first emerged on the scene in 2019 with fake videos of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are the 21st century's alternative to Photoshopping — creating images and videos of celebrities via a form of artificial intelligence (AI) called deep learning. If you have seen former US President Barack Obama calling Donald Trump a «complete dipshit», or Zuckerberg having «total control of billions of people's stolen data» — and more recently a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandana that went viral on social media — you probably know what deepfake is.

Should your ex-boss get a say in your new job? Wall Street says yes.
Wall Street and banking executives, one of the hallmarks of the job comes into play only at the end: a signed noncompete agreement. The employment clauses have long been used by big-name companies to prevent top employees from working for a nearby competitor, typically for six months to two years after leaving, allowing firms to protect intellectual property and deter brokers and consultants from poaching clients. But that may soon change in New York. Five months ago, the state Legislature passed a bill that would outlaw noncompete agreements, one of several efforts nationwide in recent years to protect a range of employees. All kinds of workers — from doctors to hairstylists to sandwich makers — are sometimes unknowingly trapped by the restrictive clauses. But as the implications of a ban at New York City's most powerful industries have come into focus, so has a deep-pocketed lobbying effort to persuade Gov.

Arab and Muslim leaders call for immediate end to Gaza war
Saudi Arabia and Muslim countries called on Saturday for an immediate end to military operations in Gaza, declaring at a joint Islamic-Arab summit in Riyadh that Israel bears responsibility for «crimes» against Palestinians. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, gathered Arab and Muslim leaders for the summit as the kingdom has sought to exert its influence to press the United States and Israel for an end to hostilities in Gaza. Dozens of leaders including Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was welcomed back into the Arab League earlier this year, attended the meeting. Prince Mohammed said the kingdom affirms its «condemnation and categorical rejection of this barbaric war against our brothers in Palestine».

Umpires correctly gave Angelo Mathews out: MCC on 'time out' controversy
umpires had correctly ruled Angelo Matthews 'timed out' but the Sri Lankan batter could have avoided getting dismissed in that fashion by consulting the officials before asking for a new helmet, Marylebone Cricket Club, the custodian of the rules governing the game, said on Saturday. Mathews had become the first batter to be dismissed 'timed out' in international cricket when he failed to take strike within the stipulated time of two minutes following the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama in their World Cup match against Bangladesh on Monday, triggering a huge controversy. Mathews realised that the strap of his helmet was broken and asked for a new helmet. The delay prompted Bangladesh to appeal and the umpires upheld it despite Mathews' repeated pleas. «When the helmet broke, it appears that Mathews did not consult with the umpires, which a player would be expected to do when seeking new equipment.
