Job quota aims to help reverse deprivation of jobs for Kannadigas: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah
Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said his government's priority is to look after the welfare of Kannadigas as they are not getting jobs in their own land, responding to the criticism over the state's proposed law mandating quotas in jobs for locals in private industries. «We are a pro-Kannada government. We want to help Kannadigas lead a peaceful life with a job in their own land,» he said in a post on microblogging platform X. Within hours after his post, he announced he was putting the bill on hold after the proposed law came under widespread attack. The CM, in a post on X, said the government would revisit the bill after elaborate discussion at the next cabinet meeting. He had called the proposed law a historic effort towards protecting the interests of local Kannadigas and reversing the deprivation of jobs for them.

Women’s right to bodily autonomy: Japan needs to think again
A 24-year Japanese model and four of her young compatriots, who want to undergo sterilization surgeries, recently filed a lawsuit at a Tokyo court to challenge Japan’s Maternal Protection Act of 1996, which deprives them of the opportunity to do so and thus violates their constitutional right to equality and self-determination. The petitioners’ lawyer argued that the Act smacks of “excessive paternalism" in assuming that “a woman’s body is destined to become a mother," denying them the right to “live a life of their choice." This Japanese law, a revised version of its earlier Eugenics Protection Law of 1948, has stringent pre-conditions for a woman to undergo a sterilization surgery.

Ambitious Delhi-Mumbai expressway project misses revised 2024 target, delayed further to 2025
Delhi-Mumbai expressway project, touted as a game-changer for Indian infrastructure, faces significant delays primarily due to land-related challenges in Gujarat. According to Times of India sources, two crucial segments totaling 62 kilometers in Gujarat only saw bidding commence in November 2023, while construction on one of these segments began in April this year, and the other started just this month. Initially slated for completion by January 2023, the project has encountered multiple setbacks, pushing the revised target to March 2024, which has also been missed. Sources reveal that constructing each stretch requires a minimum of eighteen months. To expedite progress, the project was divided into smaller 'packages' for faster execution. Officials assure that all outstanding land acquisition issues are being actively addressed. Presently, approximately 630 kilometers of the total 1,386 kilometers have been opened to traffic in various segments. Notable sections include Sohna-Dausa-Sawai Madhopur (293 km) and Jhalawar-MP/Gujarat border (245 km). Authorities express confidence that the 845-kilometer stretch from Sohna to Vadodara will be fully operational by March 2025. Subsequent sections, crucially linking to Mumbai's JNPT port, Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi's DND Flyway, are expected to follow suit.

Indian policy attention must shift from cyclical challenges to structural
As India’s new government gets into its groove, it will inevitably be the recipient of a lot of advice on the economic agenda for a third term. Given the unfinished work on many fronts, it’s reasonable to expect policymakers to receive a laundry list of needed reforms across a multitude of sectors. But, in contrast to expansive lists, state capacity and political capital are typically much more limited.
