Are you being defensive in your relationships?
Atlas of the Heart says, “At its core, defensiveness is a way to protect our ego and a fragile self-esteem."Given this understanding, every time someone tries to give us feedback, if we perceive it as them talking about our shortcoming or imperfection, we are likely to react with defensiveness. The reality is that as human beings, we are a work in progress.

Fed's favourite underlying inflation gauge is seen cooling
Federal Reserve's first-line inflation gauge is about to show some modest relief from stubborn price pressures, corroborating central bankers' prudence about the timing of interest-rate cuts. Economists expect the personal consumption expenditures price index minus food and energy — due on Friday — to rise 0.2% in April. That would mark the smallest advance so far this year for the measure, which provides a better snapshot of underlying inflation.

Taiwan's president says open to working with China on 'peace'
Taiwan's president said Sunday he was still open to working with China on building "mutual understanding and reconciliation", days after Beijing launched military drills around the self-ruled island in response to his inauguration speech. President Lai Ching-te was sworn into office on Monday, and China — which claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory and regards Lai as a «dangerous separatist» — launched military games around the island three days later. Fighter jets, naval vessels and coast guard ships encircled Taiwan until Friday night, which Chinese military analysts said was to practice seizing it.

Charting the Global Economy: New policies considered to be trade-restrictive hit a record in 2023
Inflation is set to ease across Group of Seven economies, according to those countries’ central bankers, but the progress will be uneven. G-7 leaders meeting in Italy are weighing the durability of America’s growth momentum against the perennial sickliness of Europe’s expansion. However, the softer inflation outlook could be challenged by an aging global population as more old people are spending and fewer young people are producing. In the UK, figures on inflation, migration, private-sector activity, retail sales and consumer confidence have all been published since Wednesday morning, hours before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a snap general election. An announcement on household energy bills highlighted the political divide.

Rural roads scheme achieves aim but is riddled with speed-breakers
₹3.2 trillion. However, the scheme was not free from delays, poor quality, and the lack of proper monitoring, and more importantly, had its aims based on the outdated 2001 Census. After the BJP government returned to power in 2014, the pace of construction picked up, reaching 134 km per day in 2017-18 and 2018-19, but has slowed since.

T20 World Cup: Carribean-bound India squad's IPL performances don't inspire much confidence
T20 World Cup, starting next Sunday, poses a dilemma. As a tournament, it is great. But when you think of the Indians in the IPL, particularly those chosen for the T20 World Cup, a sense of unease sets in. In fact, in a fantasy XI based on IPL performances, only two Indians deserve a place. That tells you something about India’s chances in the T20 World Cup. This Indian team doesn’t appear formidable as the tournament approaches. This probably marks the first time in years that an Indian side is entering the World Cup with such little hype. The underdog tag could work in India’s favour; less pressure isn’t always detrimental and might help the team exceed expectations. Coming back to the fantasy XI, Travis Head and Sunil Narine are going to be the openers. While Head can single-handedly win a game, Narine, one of the best IPL players of all time, has had an unexpected resurgence as a batter this year. Both can score at a rapid clip in the Powerplay and set the game up. Narine, with the ball, has also been exceptional.

India's progress would have been faster, if borders were more secure, says NSA Doval
security advisor Ajit Doval on Friday said India would have progressed at a much faster pace if its borders had been more secure, defined and not in «adversarial dispossession» while underlining that the country's power has grown immensely in last 10 years. Delivering the Rustamji Memorial Lecture organised by the BSF on its 21st investiture ceremony, he said, «In the foreseeable future, I don't think our borders are going to be as secure as we will require for our fast economic growth. So, the responsibility on border guarding forces has become very, very heavy. They have got to remain on alert 24X7 in perpetuity. They have got to see that our national interests and country are protected.» Borders are important because that is the limit which «defines our sovereignty», he said. «Zameen par jo kabza hai wo apna hai, baaki to sab adalat aur kachehri ka kaam hai, us se fark nahi padta (The land which is in our possession is ours, the rest is the matter of courts and that is immaterial),» Doval said. He said the government has paid «very, very high attention» to border security during the past 10 years, a period in which «our comprehensive national power has grown immensely».

'India becoming Pakistan because of BJP mirroring partition logic': Tharoor on Giriraj Singh's reservation comment
Giriraj Singh's comment on Muslim reservation, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday launched a scathing attack on BJP by claiming that 'India becoming Pakistan is result of the party mirroring the logic of partition.' «In fact, the sad thing is, India becoming Pakistan is the result of the BJP mirroring the logic of partition...We want to see everyone included in the narrative of Indian progress. It is simply not fair for a minister to say India becoming Pakistan when one thing we stand for in the Indian alliance is the opposite of the logic that the BJP is pursuing which mirrors the logic of Pakistan,» said Tharoor. Earlier during the day, BJP leader Giriraj Singh claimed that reservation given to Muslims is an attack on Hindus. «The time has come that the reservations given to the Muslims should be rethought about. Reservation given to them is an attack on the Hindus...If all the Hindus do not unite & fight against the Muslim reservation then in the coming days India will become Pakistan...» said Singh.

Voters in Prayagraj raise local issues like cleanliness and healthcare, activists see Lok Sabha polls as fight to save constitution
Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj Lok Sabha constituency is expected to witness an interesting electoral battle with some sections of voters here raising local issues such as cleanliness and healthcare facilities, while many seeing the poll as a fight to save the Constitution and the unique «Ilaahabadi» culture. From the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati, to the Allahabad University and the high court, Prayagraj has been a revered seat of education, spirituality and syncretic culture in Indian history. One of the largest and most populous districts of Uttar Pradesh, it also takes pride in giving India seven prime ministers. «The city has produced so many politicians, civil servants. It has three Bharat Ratna awardees within a radius of one km and has given seven prime ministers to the country. This city is a heritage. The Kumbh mela has been celebrated from ancient times, then it became a Mughal garrison town, then the British Empire came in,» Zafar Bakht, a cultural activist, told PTI. «Allahabad has always shown resistance. The people here have a 'hekdi' (arrogance) and don't cow down to anyone. It's intellectually a very vibrant city and if some mistake has been committed in the past, this city will rectify it, be assured of that,» said Bakht, who identified unemployment and youth distress as major issues here this election.
