Magnitude 6.3 earthquake hits western Afghanistan: USGS
The quake occurred at a shallow depth at around 05:10 am local time (00:40 GMT), with its epicentre about 29 kilometres north of the city of Herat, the United States Geological Survey said. Volunteers and rescuers have been working since Saturday in what are now last-ditch attempts to find survivors from the earlier series of earthquakes, which levelled entire villages and affected more than 12,000 people, according to UN estimates. Local and national officials have given conflicting counts of the number of dead and injured from the previous earthquakes, but the disaster ministry has said 2,053 people died. «We can't give exact numbers for dead and wounded as it is in flux,» said disaster management ministry spokesman Mullah Janan Sayeq. There were no immediate reports of new casualties after Wednesday's quake, which hit near Herat city, home to more than half a million people. The earlier earthquakes completely destroyed at least 11 villages in Herat province's Zenda Jan district, according to the UN. «Not a single house is left, not even a room where we could stay at night,» said 40-year-old Mohammad Naeem, who told AFP he lost 12 relatives, including his mother, after Saturday's earthquakes. «We can't live here anymore. You can see, our family got martyred here.

BoE gives 3 years to clearing houses for inspection framework
Bank of England has provided a three-and-a-half-year time frame for three domestic clearing houses to work out an inspection framework amenable to UK norms, giving British banks an advantage over their European counterparts when it comes to handling investment flows to India. The European markets regulator in October 2022 de-recognised six domestic clearing houses, creating hurdles for trading and management of billions of dollars' worth of international flows for the continent's banks operating in India. British authorities, which had initially followed suit, have, however, been much quicker at resolving issues pertaining to treatment of Indian clearing houses. «Currently a non-UK CCP (central counterparty) that enters the run-off regime from the TRR (Temporary Recognition Regime) is taken to be recognised for a period of up to three and a half years, determined by the Bank of England, from the day on which the CCP ceases to be taken to be recognised under the TRR,» read a Bank of England document dated September 28. The three Indian clearing houses listed out by the UK central bank are the India International Clearing Corporation Limited, the NSE Clearing Limited, and the NSE IFSC Clearing Corporation Limited.

Julia Fox talks about relationship with Kanye West in 'Down The Drain'. Know about her memoir
Julia Fox has talked candidly about her brief fling with rapper Kanye West in her book 'Down The Drain'. The 336-page book is largely a chronological account of Fox’s life, but it is harrowing, achingly sad at times, and a narcotics-soaked shock to the system. By the end of the memoir, the reader is amazed that Julia Fox survived so many overdoses of heroin, brutal frights, and broken relationships to tell the tale.

Amazon confirms plans to roll out satcom broadband
Amazon has said it is looking forward to working with the Indian government and local partners to bring «affordable broadband» across the country in its first comments on entering India's nascent satcom market. «Project Kuiper (Amazon's broadband-from-space venture) will bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world, including rural and remote places in India,» an Amazon spokesperson told ET in an emailed statement. «This (the move into India) is a long-term initiative for Amazon, and we look forward to working with the Indian government and local partners to connect customers and communities across the country,» it said. The Jeff Bezos-owned US tech giant's statement comes a day after ET reported in its October 10 edition that the US major has applied to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (In-Space) for getting required approvals to provide broadband services in the country.
