TRAI kicks off public consultation on national broadcasting policy
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a pre-consultation paper seeking inputs from stakeholders for the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy (NBP), which has been in the works for the last four years. The pre-consultation paper has been issued following a letter from the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) dated July 13 requesting TRAI to give its inputs on the NBP. The ministry has been putting together a comprehensive policy for the broadcasting sector on the lines of national policies for other sectors like telecom. The TRAI's pre-consultation paper touches upon aspects like the need to have public service broadcasting and the policies required for TV, print, radio, and digital. Other key issues that are up for discussion include the promotion of local content, containing piracy, and having a separate regulator for the broadcasting sector, which includes segments like TV channels, cable TV, direct-to-home (DTH), and over-the-top (OTT), among others. The pre-consultation paper also discusses issues like having a robust grievance redressal mechanism to ensure compliance with the advertising and programme codes. The regulator has also sought input on issues like strengthening the audience measurement system. The stakeholders have been asked to provide their comments on ways of unlocking growth in the animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) sector. Stakeholders have to send comments by October 10. According to the recent FICCI-EY report, TV broadcasting sector revenues dipped 1.5% to Rs 70,900 crore in 2022.

Here’s why doctors should consider professional indemnity insurance
Magsaysay award winner Dr Ravi Kannan is credited with leading the widely admired Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Assam. He started with a staff of 23 people and this grew to 451 over a period of around 17 years, providing free or subsidized cancer care treatments to an average of 5,000 new patients annually. While Kannan serves as a shining example for all and brings an aura to the medical profession it deserves, the healthcare profession is not without its challenges. A large urban population has increasingly come around seeing healthcare as a consumer service. Much like with every other sector, consumer expectations are rising from healthcare as well. Small unfulfilled expectations now lead to court complaints and litigation against doctors. Courts have concurred that a section of people are prone to sue doctors and hospitals at the slightest opportunity.

Connected vehicles to boost e-SIM demand by 3 million in 1-1.5 years
connected vehicles is likely to spur demand for embedded sims (e-sims) by as much as 3 million over the next 12-18 months. This, industry experts said, would drive growth in enterprise business for telecom operators. Experts predict the widespread adoption of e-SIMs in automobiles will quadruple the demand for semiconductor chips by 2025. “We believe that the number of OEM (original equipment maker) fitment connected vehicles could increase by around 2-3 million over the next 12-18 months,” a spokesperson for Bharti Airtel said, adding that demand for e-sims is led by manufacturers’ focus on launching internet-enabled vehicles with connectivity and smart features at the core of the product offering. Currently, the e-sim market for telcos is just less than 1% of enterprise revenues of telcos, according to industry estimates.

Ahead of the voting, PM Modi urged the Rajya Sabha members to pass the Bill unanimously, saying that it would provide countrymen with a new belief and confidence going forward. «All members and political parties have played a significant role in empowering women and enhancing 'Nari Shakti'. Let us give the country a strong message,» he said. PM Modi said there had been deliberations on the Women's Reservation Bill in the two Houses for the past two days and over 132 members took part in the meaningful discussion which will be helpful in taking the country forward. The amendments moved by Opposition members were negatived and individual clauses of the Bill were also voted on. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that the Bill had been passed.
