Big Waqf reset begins: Parliament panel hits start button, sends feelers to experts, stakeholders for inputs
The bill in question, which aims to reform the registration process of Waqf properties through a centralised portal, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8. The committee, led by BJP's Jagdambika Pal, is seeking «views/suggestions from the public in general and NGOs, experts, stakeholders and institutions in particular» due to the «wider implications» of the bill, as stated by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. People are requested to provide their suggestions in writing within the next 15 days.

Air India. In an exchange filing, the airline confirmed this key development, marking another step toward the merger of Air India and Vistara, a deal first disclosed in November 2022. But what happens to the flyers with Club Vistara loyalty points? As part of the merger, Vistara's frequent flyer program, Club Vistara, will be discontinued and integrated into Air India's Flying Returns program. However, until the integration is finalized, Club Vistara will continue its regular operations. Vistara sent an email on May 15, 2024, stating, “The process of integration between Air India and Vistara is ongoing, while we await some regulatory approvals. As we work towards a merged, larger airline, Club Vistara will also merge with Air India’s Flying Returns.”

Cyclone warning: People living in weak structures in Kutch district told to move to safer places
Kutch district have asked people living in huts and makeshift houses to take shelter in schools, temples or other buildings after the IMD said that a deep depression over the area might turn into a cyclonic storm by Friday morning. Following the warning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kutch Collector Amit Arora issued a video message asking people living in Abdasa, Mandvi and Lakhpat talukas to leave their huts and kutcha houses and take shelter in any school or other buildings. He also urged locals to come forward and provide shelter to such poor people in their houses till Friday evening. In a statement on Thursday night, IMD said, «Deep depression over Kutch and adjoining areas is likely to move nearly westwards into northeast Arabian sea and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It would then move west-northwestwards away from Indian coast during subsequent two days.»

Quess Corp's headcount crosses 600,000, joins global league of staffing giants
Quess Corp's global headcount has topped 600,000, putting it in the same league with global staffing behemoths Adecco, Randstad and Manpower, and software services giant Tata Consultancy Services in terms of number of employees. The Bengaluru-headquartered firm, which offers staffing, workforce management and technology outsourcing services, ended the June quarter with an employee count of 597,000. Since then, it has added at least 6,000 workers, chairman Ajit Isaac told ET. “We are among the largest globally in headcount and perhaps the youngest to achieve this in a span of 17 years,” he said.

Meta’s Llama models hit 350 million downloads, leads open-source AI
Meta’s Llama series of AI models have become the fastest growing open-source family of models securing 350 million downloads globally on Hugging Face. Of these, 20 million downloads were made last month alone, the company said. Besides the community platform Hugging Face, Llama was also being accessed through Meta’s cloud partners such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft’s Azure, Databricks, Dell, Google Cloud, Groq, NVIDIA, IBM watsonx, Scale AI, Snowflake, to name a few. “Hosted Llama usage by token volume across our major cloud service provider partners more than doubled May through July 2024 when we released Llama 3.1,” Meta said in a blogpost on Thursday.

RBI cautions against fraud using its name
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cautioned the public against unscrupulous elements that use various methods to defraud people by using the name of the central bank in some capacity. RBI said these fraudsters use enticing tactics like fake letterheads and email addresses of RBI, impersonating as employees of RBI or intimidating tactics via calls, SMS or emails impersonating as RBI officials threatening to freeze/block/deactivate bank accounts of recipients and convince/coerce them to share certain personal details, account/login details/ card information, PIN, OTP, etc. or install some unauthorised/ unverified application using a link provided in the communication.

FPIs may get funds on settlement day: Sebi official
custodians would make funds available to foreign portfolio investors on the day of settlement itself, a senior Sebi official said on Thursday. «Inefficiencies and opacity dog not only the Indian domestic investor; they also impact foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). While India fully moved to a T+1 settlement cycle in January 2023, most FPIs are only able to access their funds from sale of securities on T+2 or later,» Sebi whole time member Ananth Narayan said. He was speaking at the Global Fintech Fest.

After inspecting the airline's training records, the DGCA found that pilots were trained without the necessary approvals. According to DGCA officials, “The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to Akasa Airlines concerning several regulatory breaches identified during a recent review.
