Boeing strike could drag on as workers push for higher wages, union leader says
Boeing «could go on for a while» as workers are confident they can get bigger wage increases and an improved pension, union leader Jon Holden said in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR) on Saturday. More than 30,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), who produce Boeing's top-selling 737 MAX and other jets in the Seattle and Portland, began a strike on Friday after overwhelmingly voting down a new contract. Boeing and union negotiators are due to return to the bargaining table next week, in talks overseen by U.S. federal mediators, after more than 94% of workers voted to reject an initial contract offer that Holden had endorsed.

Trump campaign blasts NYT for 'blood and soil' label on Vance's ideology, calls headline 'disgusting'
Republican nominees Donald Trump and JD Vance have strongly criticized The New York Times for a headline used in an opinion piece against Vance. The article, written by Opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie, was titled «JD Vance’s Blood-and-Soil Nationalism Finds Its Target.» It criticized Vance, the vice presidential candidate, for claiming that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets and wildlife. The same claims were mentioned by Trump during a recent presidential debate. Bouie's column also linked Vance's comments to bomb threats made against schools and government buildings in Springfield. Trump campaign advisor Alex Bruesewitz called the headline «disgusting» and demanded an apology from the newspaper.

Earth to get a new moon? Meet 2024 PT5, our temporary mini-moon for 53 days!
Earth is about to welcome a new mini-moon for a short period. Starting from September 29 until November 25, a small asteroid named 2024 PT5 will temporarily be captured by Earth's gravity, according to researchers Carlos de la Fuente Marcos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The asteroid, approximately 10 meters wide, was discovered through the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System. Researchers found that its size, speed, and trajectory are suitable for it to be caught by Earth's gravitational field for 53 days. During this time, it will orbit Earth before resuming its path through the solar system. «2024 PT5 will circle the Earth one time before it escapes back into space,» the researchers stated in their paper. This event is known as a «temporarily captured flyby,» where an asteroid enters Earth's gravity but does not make multiple orbits.

With revenge on mind, Barcelona visit Girona
Barcelona’s trophyless campaign last season was when it was spanked not once, but twice, by the formerly modest Girona. Girona dealt Barcelona a pair of stinging 4-2 defeats as the club partly owned by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi ownership emerged as one of the surprise packages of European football. It finished the Spanish league in third place, just behind Barcelona in second, and classified for the Champions League for the first time. Those embarrassing losses to a fellow Catalan club played a part in the downfall of Xavi Her nández as Barcelona's coach.

In J&K, it's youth versus three families, says PM Modi at Doda rally
Jammu and Kashmir with an attack on the «three (political) families)» of Congress, National Conference and PDP, alleging they jointly destroyed the state for decades to serve their own selfish interests by promoting corruption, separatism and terrorism. He assured the voters that the status of full statehood to the union territory will be granted by a BJP government. Addressing a rally in Doda, Udhampur on Saturday, the prime minister charged that these three parties want to restore Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The clause had deprived several sections of the society from benefits like reservation and welfare schemes of the Centre. «These Assembly elections are between three (political) families and the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. On one side are the three families and on the other are the sons and daughters who have set out with big dreams. One family is of the Congress (Nehru-Gandhis), one of NC (Abdullahs) and one of PDP (Muftis). What these three families have jointly done to you is not less than any sin. These three families are responsible for destroying the state through decades,» Modi said.

Flying, walking, watching: Track the anthropologist's (carbon) footprint
The shortest flight I ever took was from Tongatapu, capital of Tonga, to 'Eua, an island some 40 km farther away. On paper, the ferry takes 1.5 hrs. But its schedule is unreliable, the sea unruly, locals advise against it, and the black diesel smoke enough to make one nauseous. The longest flight we were on took us from Qatar to New Zealand, though fortunately, this was in a luxurious Qatar Airways Qsuite. Flying business class does account for three times more CO2 than roughing it in economy though.

Hindu marriage not to be dissolved as contract: Allahabad HC
Allahabad High Court, in a significant judgement, has ruled that a Hindu marriage is not to be dissolved or terminated as a contract. The sacrament based Hindu marriage may be dissolved (in law), in limited circumstances and too only on the strength of evidence led by the parties, it said. Allowing the appeal filed by a wife against dissolution of marriage, a division bench of justices Saumitra Dayal Singh and Donadi Ramesh was of the view that even in «granting the divorce on the strength of mutual consent, the learned court below may have dissolved the marriage between the parties only in the event of that consent continuing to exist on the date of the order being passed».
