The announcement came as part of Bhartiya Janata Party's first list of 195 candidates, which was released on Saturday. This is the third time PM Modi is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Saturday announced that farmers will stage dharnas in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand on February 21 to press their demands, including a legal guarantee of MSP. Speaking to reporters after attending a panchayat in Sisauli here, Tikait said a resolution was passed during the meeting asking the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to launch a tractor march to Delhi in the last week of February if the government does not accept farmers' demands. Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul on Saturday said a little bit of underlying friction between the judiciary and the executive is good to maintain checks and balances in a democracy. Addressing a function to confer the Sansad Ratna Awards on parliamentarians, Justice Kaul said the checks and balances of a democracy were enunciated in the Constitution which provides for an administration, a legislature and the court. «Since we have a democracy based on the first past the post concept where most governments would be having less than 50 per cent of the votes, the court plays an important role in maintaining a check and balance on the system,» he said. Justice Kaul, quoting a former chief justice, said «a little bit of underlying tension is good. If things are very hunky-dory between the judiciary and the executive, then we have a problem».

Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Wednesday said they are ready for holding talks with the Centre over their demands, including a legal guarantee to minimum support price. Citing media reports, Dallewal said Union Minister Anurag Thakur has, in his statement, said that the Centre was ready for holding talks and was also ready to resolve the issues of the farmers. «We do not want to give any room to the Centre for saying that it was inviting us, but they did not accept it. Bali is set to implement its new tourism tax from February 14, with officials revealing the final details as the launch date approaches. Confirmed details now include the exemption of seven visitor visa categories from the IDR 150,000 tourism tax fee. While these visa holders won't need to pay the tax, they are required to log in online and apply for an exemption. The exempted visa categories comprise diplomatic and official visas, crew members on transportation vehicles, and holders of temporary or permanent stay permit cards (KITAS and KITAP). Those with family unification visas, student visas, Golden Visas, and business-specific visas are also exempt. Applications for levy exemption must be submitted at least one month before entering Bali. The local tourism authority will then verify and decide on the application within a maximum of five working days, with the decision communicated to tourists through the Love Bali system at lovebali.baliprov.go.id.
