SC raps WB school service commission, says intentionally covered up lapses
West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) saying it «intentionally» covered up the lapses and illegalities in the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers in state-run and state-aided schools. The scathing remarks came from a bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar in its judgement by which it annulled the appointment of 25,753 teachers and staffers. Authoring the judgement, the CJI said despite the factual background and the credible evidence indicating irregularities the «WBSSC initially did try and cover up the lapses and illegalities». The CJI went on, «The cover up itself has made the verification and ascertainment more difficult or rather impossible given the scale of camouflage and dressing up done at each stage. We are convinced that the entire selection process was intentionally compromised due to the illegalities involved.» The top court upheld the Calcutta High Court's findings on illegalities in the selection process on 17 counts. The high court said OMR sheets were destroyed without the scanned mirror images being preserved on the commission's server.

Armed forces should prepare dynamic perspective planning addressing various challenges: Rajnath Singh
Rajnath Singh on Thursday said the armed forces should prepare a "dynamic perspective planning" addressing both long-term and short-term challenges, keeping in mind the current dynamic geostrategic changes and the ongoing global security scenarios. The nation is proud of its army, and the government is committed to facilitate the army in their forward movement, on the road to reforms and capability modernisation,» Singh said. In his address, he further said unconventional and asymmetric warfare, including hybrid war will be «part of the future conventional wars». Singh stressed upon the present geostrategic uncertainties and the complex world situation which effects everyone globally. He said the present world is «an inter-connected world» and such incidents whether happening in «our neighbourhood or far off countries will effect everyone».

Parl panel flags delays in MGNREGA payments, calls for pension reforms in NSAP
Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and called for urgent reforms in the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) to ensure better support for vulnerable sections of society. The Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, in its eighth report on MGNREGA that was tabled in Parliament on Thursday, highlighted that delays in wage payments continue to be a significant issue, affecting lakhs of rural workers dependent on the scheme for livelihood. It noted that despite digital advancements, workers often face long waiting periods for their wages, exacerbating financial distress. The report urged the government to address systemic bottlenecks, improve fund allocation, and ensure timely payments. Additionally, the panel expressed concerns over the declining budgetary allocation for MGNREGA and the increasing demand for jobs under the scheme. It recommended revising the wage structure to match inflation and strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms to protect workers' rights. The report also pointed out issues such as the lack of proper job card issuance, the need for better social audits, and the importance of including more women beneficiaries in MGNREGA employment.

Amazon submits last-minute bid to buy TikTok, claims report
Amazon.com has put in a last-minute offer to buy short-form video app TikTok, New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Trump is slated to meet with top White House officials Wednesday to discuss TikTok's fate. People familiar with the talks have outlined a potential deal that could involve bringing on a number of new U.S. investors, including Oracle, the technology giant, and Blackstone, the private equity firm, while sidestepping a formal sale. But it isn't clear that such a structure would satisfy the conditions of the federal law, as per the report. Amazon has some existing ties to TikTok. TikTok video app, which counts 170 million users in the United States, has become a major hub of retail shopping, with influencers recommending products to viewers. While the company has its own e-commerce operation known as TikTok Shop, many influencers encourage people to buy products on Amazon, which gives the influencers a cut of the transactions. It has also provided some technical infrastructure, NYT News Service reported. Amazon had previously tried to make a TikTok clone of sorts, called Inspire, inside its own app. Internally, it was a high-profile initiative, but was widely seen as unsuccessful at attracting shoppers. The company removed it from the app this year, as per the report. Amazon isn't the first retailer to express interest in the app. In 2020, when TikTok was first pressured to sell to U.S. owners, Microsoft and Walmart made a bid for the company.
