The potential for China to use balloons for spying became a global issue in February when the United States shot down what it said was a Chinese surveillance balloon, but which China said was a civilian craft that accidentally drifted astray. Taiwan is on high alert for Chinese activities, both military and political, ahead of the Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary election.

Asian shares slip into BOJ meeting, US inflation test
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) meets Tuesday amid much chatter that it is considering how and when to move away from negative interest rates. None of the analysts polled by Reuters expected a definitive move at this meeting, but policy makers might start laying the groundwork for an eventual shift. April was favoured by 17 of 28 economists as the kick-off for negative rates to be scrapped, making the BOJ one of the few central banks in the world actually tightening. «Since the last meeting in October, 10-year JGB yields have fallen and the yen has appreciated, giving the BOJ little incentive to revise policy at this stage,» said Barclays economist Christian Keller. «We think the BOJ will wait to confirm the result of the 'shunto' wage negotiations next spring, before moving in April.» Japan's Nikkei lost 1.2%, weighed in part by a firm yen.

No new interim norms to regulate big tech players: CCI chairperson
Competition Commission of India (CCI) has no plans to bring in a new regulation for digital players until the government decides if a new law is required to regulate big tech, Ravneet Kaur, chairperson of the antitrust watchdog has said, scotching speculations about interim norms. In an interview to Banikinkar Pattanayak, Kaur also said the regulator would soon wrap up processes to notify new settlement, commitment, combinations and leniency-plus frameworks. Edited excerpts: In recent months, the CCI has sought public comments on four critical frameworks-settlement, commitment, combinations and leniency-plus. By when can we expect these to be notified? We have received public comments on these draft regulations. Separate groups within the CCI are looking into the feedback and suggestions by stakeholders, and the frameworks will be finalised after that. It's difficult to set a timeframe for notification of these regulations because they mark far-reaching changes from the extant regulations and, therefore, have wider ramifications. So, comprehensive deliberations are required for each of them. But our efforts are to wrap up the process as soon as possible.
