Israel says it struck Hezbollah weapons smuggling sites in Syria, testing a fragile ceasefire
Hezbollah weapons smuggling sites along Syria's border with Lebanon, the Israeli military said Saturday, testing a fragile, days-old ceasefire that halted months of fighting between the sides but has seen continued sporadic fire. The military said it struck sites that had been used to smuggle weapons from Syria to Lebanon after the ceasefire took effect, which the military said was a violation of its terms. There was no immediate comment from Syrian authorities or activists monitoring the conflict in that country. Hezbollah also did not immediately comment. Israeli aircraft have struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, citing ceasefire violations, several times since the ceasefire began on Wednesday.

Generative AI will impact regional local job markets differently across OECD
job markets differently across OECD countries, exacerbating existing urban-rural income and productivity gaps as well as the digital divides between regions, according to a new OECD report. Job Creation and Local Economic Development 2024 finds that, following a decade of employment growth, over half of OECD regions had reached employment rates above 70 per cent by 2023, with more women joining the workforce, narrowing the gender gap in labour force participation in 84 per cent of OECD regions. The employment boom has also led to regional labour shortages and gaps, particularly in densely populated urban regions such as Lombardy (Italy) and Hamburg (Germany), as well as in regions struggling with population decline and ageing.

Banks report 50.4% increase in gold loan demand amid financial distress
Gold Loans: Bank loans secured by gold jewelry have seen a dramatic 50.4% increase in the first seven months of this fiscal year, ending October 18, 2024. This surge contrasts sharply with other personal loan categories, which experienced single-digit growth, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data. Total outstanding gold loans reached Rs 1,54,282 crore by October 18, up from Rs 1,02,562 crore in March 2024. This represents a 56% year-on-year increase, compared to 13% in October 2023. Bankers attribute this rise to multiple factors, including borrowers moving from non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to banks and a preference for secured loans over unsecured options. Bank loans to NBFCs have decreased by 0.7% to Rs 1.5 lakh crore during the same period.
