No food, no water: Man survives 2 months lost at sea, loses half his weight
Mikhail Pichugin, 46, was discovered severely malnourished, having lost 50 kilograms (110 pounds) during his time at sea. Authorities confirmed that the bodies of his 49-year-old brother, Sergei, and 15-year-old nephew, Ilya, were found on board the small rubber boat, marking a tragic end to the family’s voyage. The three, according to a Moscow Times report, had embarked on a whale-watching trip from the Khabarovsk region in early August. Their plan was to explore the Shantar Islands, located off the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, with the intention of returning by August 9. When they failed to arrive back as scheduled, a search and rescue operation was launched, but the group’s boat was nowhere to be found. Pichugin’s ordeal ended late Monday when a fishing vessel spotted him near the Kamchatka Peninsula, approximately 23 kilometers (12 miles) offshore. This location was more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) east of the Shantar Islands, where the trio was last seen. Pichugin was immediately taken to a hospital in the Magadan region for treatment after his rescue.

What factor will swing Maharashtra verdict - crop, caste or cash? Poll drama turns more and more intense
This election could determine the fate of political parties like Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Times of India newspaper wrote on October 16. The Congress, which ranked fourth in the last assembly election, hopes to build on its parliamentary resurgence. For the BJP, a win is vital after a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha (LS) elections, where it secured only nine seats in Maharashtra, the report (by Priyanka Kakodkar) said. The ruling Mahayuti alliance has introduced several welfare schemes to win voters, including a Rs 1,500 monthly stipend for underprivileged women under the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. This initiative, costing Rs 46,000 crore annually, aims to mimic the success of similar schemes in other states.

Tired of Trudeau: Why Canadians are not willing to trust their PM
Justin Trudeau is finding it hard to convince Canadians about India's alleged link to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, in Canada last year. His latest move to brand Indian High Commissioner to Canada as a «person of interest» in the Nijjar probe comes with the same vague allegations he made against India last year. "...we started to understand through intelligence agencies that India was possibly if not probably, behind Nijjar's killing...," Trudeau said on Monday, while accusing the Indian government of supporting criminal activities in Canada. «Possibly if not probably» is same as the claim of «credible allegations» Trudeau made last year. Besides his vague allegations against India as he tries to pander to his Khalistani Sikh votes before an impending election, Trudeau has another problem: in the nine years as the Canadian PM, he has lost credibility and is widely expected to lose the next election. His desperation to throw India-Canada ties under the bus to retain support of his Khalistani vote bank seems all the more clumsy when he has landed in a political quicksand and thinks he can distract Canadians' attention from his own multi-crisis which include a coup brewing in his own caucus and corruption allegations. How not to apply for job: Applicant makes major AI blunder in cover letter. CEO reacts
The blunder occurred when a job seeker applied for a content-related position at Narang’s company. The applicant, instead of submitting a polished cover letter, sent a document filled with placeholder text typically found in AI-generated templates. The letter included phrases like, “I’m proficient in [mention your key skills], and I’m passionate about [explain briefly how you can add value].” It was clear that the candidate had forgotten to replace the placeholders with personal details, making the application incomplete and impersonal.

A pragmatic approach to carbon pricing may help against climate barriers
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. At the recent Energy Transition Summit, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored the adverse impact of unilateral and arbitrary policies such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on India’s trade and green-transition pathways, noting that India’s decarbonization journey should be guided by its own development needs and not by the Global North. Sitharaman was referring to the EU’s measure that would impose a charge on imports into the EU of products of aluminium, iron and steel, cement, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen beginning January 2026.

NPS: A 35-year old can get Rs 2 lakh as monthly pension by investing Rs 21,000 a month now; how much should you invest in NPS?
The National Pension System (NPS) has emerged as one of the most popular investment vehicles for retirement planning. It offers you the option to invest in different types of asset classes — equity, corporate debt, government bonds and alternative investment funds. Regular investment and a little bit of planning can generate as much as Rs 2 lakh a month from NPS when you retire. Let's get one thing straight at the beginning: The pension you earn from NPS after retirement will depend on how much corpus you can accumulate. Before you start investing, you need to know the withdrawal rules of NPS. At present, an NPS subscriber cannot withdraw the entire accumulated corpus on maturity. You have to invest at least 40% of the total NPS corpus in an annuity plan from a life insurance company. The annuity amount will get a regular pension after retirement. The remaining 60% can be withdrawn as a lump sum.
