Russia declares a federal emergency in a border region that is under attack from Ukrainian forces
Russia's Ministry for Emergencies on Friday declared the situation in the Kursk region a «federal level» emergency, four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops poured over the border in what appeared to be Kyiv's biggest attack on Russian soil since the war began. Meanwhile, a Russian plane-launched missile hit a Ukrainian shopping mall late morning Friday, killing at least nine people and injuring 26, authorities said. The mall in Kostiantynivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, is located in the town's residential area. Thick black smoke rose above it after the strike. «This is another targeted attack on a crowded place, another act of terror by the Russians,» Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said in a Telegram post.

Haryana schools to replace 'Good Morning' with 'Jai Hind'
Haryana schools will change from «Good Morning» to «Jai Hind» as part of an initiative to foster patriotism among students, ToI reported on August 9. The Haryana Directorate of School Education has mandated this change, instructing school principals, headmasters, and education officers at district and block levels to implement it from August 15. The state government aims to «inculcate a deep sense of patriotism and national pride» in the students by making this shift. The department emphasised that the new greeting should be used before the national flag is hoisted on Independence Day. The idea is that using «Jai Hind» as a daily greeting will inspire students with a sense of national unity and respect for India's rich history.

UP man chokes minor sister on busy road in Meerut, locals record videos until she dies
Meerut, a 26-year-old man allegedly strangled his 17-year-old sister to death in full public view, while onlookers stood by recording videos instead of intervening. The horrifying crime took place in Nangla Shekhu village, located in the Incholi area, and has left the community in shock. The police reported that the accused, identified as Mohd Haseen, was reportedly enraged by his sister's persistent desire to marry a man from a different religion. SP (Meerut Rural) Kamlesh Bahadur confirmed the incident, stating, «The crime occurred on Wednesday following a heated argument between the siblings at home. We've arrested the accused, and an FIR has been filed under IPC section 302 (murder) and other relevant sections, based on a complaint from their mother.» SHO (Incholi), Yogendra Singh, provided further details, explaining that the victim had been in a relationship with a man from another community, which had deeply displeased her family. Earlier in March, she had eloped with her boyfriend, leading her family to file a complaint, alleging that she had been kidnapped.
