Court rejects gangster Abu Salem's plea against prison transfer
special TADA court here on Tuesday rejected gangster Abu Salem's plea opposing his planned transfer from the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai. Salem is undergoing life sentence at the Taloja prison in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The decision to shift him was a «conspiracy to kill him» as he was likely to be released in a few months, Salem's application claimed. The current prison was safe for him and he could be attacked by members of the rival gangs in other jails in Maharashtra, it said. The jail administration told the court it wanted to relocate Salem as his current cell needed reconstruction, and there was no other safe cell for him in Taloja. Special judge for cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act B D Shelke, after hearing both the sides, rejected Salem's plea. The court, however, asked the inspector general (prisons), Pune, to issue appropriate directions to the Taloja jail superintendent to ensure the gangster's safety while shifting him to the central prison in Nashik, as planned. A direction should also be issued to the Nashik prison to ensure the safety and security of the convict, the judge said.

India's inflation also 'K-shaped'; rural folk more hurt by price-rise: HSBC
Mumbai: Just like the post-pandemic recovery, the Indian inflation story is also 'K-shaped' and is hurting certain sections more than others, a foreign brokerage said on Tuesday. Rural consumers are more impacted by price-rise than their urban counterparts, economists at HSBC said, adding it outstripped the urban segment by 1.1 percentage point in May, mainly due to higher food inflation. «The same developments, driving a K-shaped recovery, seem to be driving K-shaped inflation dynamics,» they said in a report. The report by its chief economist Pranjul Bhandari cited the ongoing heat waves, pointing out that higher food and lower core inflation are coexisting because of crop damage and livestock mortality pushing up the former.

You should improve your anti-theft system. I didn't take all the phones and laptops, fearing it might hurt your business,» Sang wrote. At the end of the note, he added, «Contact me if you want your laptop and phone back,» and left his number.

'Static' fees for hedge funds and private markets questioned amid higher expected returns
In its Investment Management Fees: Fairness Revisited report, investment consultancy bfinance stated sectors such as hedge funds and private markets have kept their hurdle fees «static» despite higher «risk-free» rates. A hurdle rate is the minimum profit or returns a hedge fund must earn before charging a fee. More specifically, in sectors where expected returns have increased as a direct result of higher interest rates, including hedge funds and private debt, the lack of change in hurdle rates has resulted in «greater overall fee leakage» and a higher percentage of overall return going...

Bandhan Bank shares fall 2% as Sensex scales 78,000 for the first time
bank move as administrative in nature to ensure a smooth leadership transition in the Kolkata-based lender, but concerns over Bandhan Bank's asset quality perhaps kept investors anxious. The stock price closed lower at Rs 203.70 on BSE Tuesday, about 16% fall from Rs 242 seen on the first trading day of the year. «While the market may fear that there could be more skeletons in the closet — in terms of further increase in the stress pool — we believe this (appointment of additional director) is more of a prudent measure exercised by the RBI,» said Suresh Ganapathy, managing director and head of financial services Research at Macquarie Capital.
