PM's Independence Day speech uninspiring, failed to address important issues, claims opposition
Opposition leaders on Thursday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Independence Day speech, alleging that it failed to unite and inspire people or address important issues faced by the nation. Communist Party of India General Secretary D Raja said the prime minister's speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on India's 78th Independence Day did not place any issue before the nation to unite and inspire people. «Whatever he spoke is in line with the sinister, divisive agenda of RSS,» Raja told PTI. «The prime minister speaks about 2047 but he failed to address the issues of plurality, and diversity of the nation. He is trying to impose uniformity on the country,» he alleged.

In volatile election season, US companies battle 'brand disinformation'
Google to Netflix, prominent US companies are battling internet boycott calls over their perceived political leanings in a polarising election season that has exposed them to what researchers call "brand disinformation." The online campaigns, which falsely claim both Netflix and Google are funding or favoring Democratic nominee Kamala Harris ahead of the November election, illustrate how brands are vulnerable to political falsehoods that can expose them to financial perils. Those calling for a boycott, researchers say, include fake accounts on the platform X. The site is owned by Elon Musk, who has endorsed Donald Trump and appears to exert an outsized influence on voters through the platform, which has become a hotbed of disinformation.

A California bill to regulate AI causes alarm in Silicon Valley
California bill that could impose restrictions on artificial intelligence has tech companies, investors and activists scrambling to explain what the first-of-its-kind legislation could mean for their industry in the state. The bill is still winding its way through the state capital in Sacramento. It is expected to reach the California state assembly appropriations committee on Thursday before facing a vote by the full assembly. If signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the bill would require companies to test the safety of powerful AI technologies before releasing them to the public. It would also allow California's attorney general to sue companies if their technologies cause serious harm, such as mass property damage or human casualties.

Survey shows disaster-prone Southeast Asia is also best prepared, suggesting lessons can be learned
Southeast Asia is among the regions most prone to natural disasters, but a new analysis released Thursday shows its people also feel the best equipped to deal with them. It seems logical that the countries in and around the Pacific Ring of Fire, vulnerable to earthquakes, typhoons, storm surges and other dangers, are also the best prepared, but the survey by Gallup for the Lloyd's Register Foundation shows that's not always the case in other regions. «Frequent exposure to hazard isn't the only factor that determines how prepared people feel,» Benedict Vigers, a research consultant with Gallup, told The Associated Press.
