12-foot venomous cobra rescued from Karnataka house, released into the wild
cobra was rescued in Karnataka's Agumbe village after causing panic earlier this week. Ajay Giri, the field director at Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), shared a video of the rescue on Instagram. According to Giri, the 12-foot snake was crossing a road when it was disturbed by onlookers and took refuge in a bush within a house's compound. When the home owners discovered the highly venomous snake on their property, they became worried and contacted the forest department, which then informed ARRS about the situation. Recognizing the danger to both residents and the snake, ARRS staff promptly sprang into action and rushed to the location. A video shared by Ajay Giri shows snake rescuers gently removing the snake from the premises.

12 lakh excess deaths in Covid year, reveals report; govt says methodology flawed
mortality data from the National Family Health Survey 2019-21 and concluded that nearly 12 lakh additional deaths occurred in 2020, which is eight times higher than the official Covid-19 death toll reported in India for that year. The Health Ministry has rejected this estimate, calling it «exaggerated and misleading,» and has criticized the study for its flawed methodology. According to the study published in open access journal Sciences Advances, the authors found that in the subsample they studied, there was a reduction in life expectancy at birth of 2.6 years between 2019 and 2020, larger than reductions documented in any high-income country. This reduction was substantial even relative to trends in India: overall life expectancy at birth in 2020 was equivalent to all-India levels over a decade earlier. Relative to the 1.3-year life expectancy loss among high-caste Hindus, the loss for Muslims was 5.4 years.

Burden of lung diseases in India likely much higher than Lancet study's projection: Doctors
Lancet study, due to high levels of air pollution and tobacco consumption. According to the study published in May, ischaemic heart disease will continue to be the leading cause of death around the world, followed by stroke, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In ischaemic heart disease, narrowing of vessels in the organ reduces blood flow. The study projected that men and women around the world could live longer by up to five and four years, respectively. «It is going to remain the number one killer and disabling disease with continued bad lifestyle and increasing stress. Yet, there is a lack of understanding of the exact mechanism of formation of these blockages (in the heart's blood vessels). Till we understand the mechanism, the solutions cannot be found,» said Dr Atul Mathur, Executive Director, Interventional Cardiology and Chief of Cath Lab, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi.

India's nonprofit sector facing a crisis? Here’s the inside scoop
Tata Education Trust, later renewed. This event cast a spotlight on the instability and challenges faced by India’s philanthropies and nonprofits. Shortly after, the Centre for Financial Accountability's parent trust had its Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence revoked. Many prominent NGOs and think tanks in India are now struggling, along with the communities they serve. In the past few years, the sector has faced administrative hurdles, financial losses, and workforce reductions, retreating from various areas of service. Accurate data on the sector's impact is hard to come by due to the broad definition of civil society organisations, encompassing grassroots groups, large networks, faith-based organisations, research bodies, social movements, and youth groups.

Know Your Fund Manager | Nimesh Chandan, CIO, Bajaj Finserv AMC
behavioural finance plays a key role in his investment strategy, making him a force to be reckoned with in the finance world. Let's start with your personal story I was born and brought up in Mumbai. My family was in the business of importing and trading dry fruits and spices. I used to accompany my father to his office during my school and college vacation. That gave me an early exposure to business. At an early age of 14, I was fascinated by learning about business management and decided to pursue an MBA after my graduation. However, by the time I graduated, my interest shifted towards finance and capital markets. After completing my MMS (Finance) from Somaiya Institute of Management and Research, I worked as a sell-side research analyst wherein I tracked key sectors like IT and pharma. I came across the concept of behavioural finance in 2004 and decided to move to buy-side or the mutual fund side to learn about how psychology impacts investment decisions.

CrowdStrike update that caused global outage likely skipped checks, experts say
Security experts said CrowdStrike's routine update of its widely used cybersecurity software, which caused clients' computer systems to crash globally on Friday, apparently did not undergo adequate quality checks before it was deployed. The latest version of its Falcon Sensor software was meant make CrowdStrike clients' systems more secure against hacking by updating the threats it defends against. But faulty code in the update files resulted in one of the most widespread tech outages in recent years for companies using Microsoft's Windows operating system.

US Presidential Election 2024: What are the odds of Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden? Betting markets reflect recent trends
Joe Biden, it is now even the betting markets who are losing faith in the president and his ability to continue in office. Research on the various betting markets has revealed that the odds of Vice-President Kamala Harris replacing Biden on the ballot box are higher. In the betting markets, a basic principle is when the price of an outcome is priced low, the likelihood of it happening is high. Higher the price means lower the expected outcome. Higher the price also indicates higher the risk and the person betting on the outcome taking a higher risk in favor of the outcome and expecting a positive outcome.
