Pre-market action: Here's the trade setup for today's session
Equity markets buckled under relentless selling pressure on Thursday as investors turned risk averse in the ongoing poll season and further lightened their equity exposure to avoid being caught off guard. «We expect this volatility to continue in the near term in the absence of any major positive trigger. Now till Nifty holds below 22000 zones, weakness could be seen towards 21700,» said Siddhartha Khemka, Head — Retail Research, Motilal Oswal.

Over 90% of US adults are highly susceptible to heart diseases, claim researchers
study conducted in the US, it has been found that 90 per cent of the adults over the age of 20 are at a high risk of developing a heart disease. This does not mean that 90 per cent of the US Population has full blown heart disease but it only means that they are susceptible to developing conditions which quicken the onset of heart diseases, as per a report on NBC News. Researchers used a model which identified high risk population using the strong links between the heart and those who had obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular issues and Kidney diseases. While it is well known in the medical circles that those who suffer from any of the above mentioned conditions, do develop a susceptibility towards a heart disease, research has only confirmed this.

Smartphone shipment volumes surge in Q1, outlook stays strong
Indian smartphone market registered 8-10% year-on-year growth in shipment volumes in the first quarter of 2024 and is set to grow in high single-digits this calendar year, driven by premiumisation trend and 5G adoption, market trackers Counterpoint Research and Cybermedia Research said. As per Counterpoint, volume shipments grew 8% in the quarter ended March while revenue jumped 18%. However, sales were less than expected due to a drop in retail footfalls and a section of consumers cutting down on discretionary spending even as better inventory levels allowed brands to fill channels with multiple new launches, it said. Cybermedia Research (CMR) said the market recorded 10% year-on-year growth in Q1 2024, with 5G shipments surging 70%, driven by budget 5G handsets (₹10,000-15,000 price band) that grew 400% on year.

Peel Hunt: All British firms should be included in the GB ISA regardless of incorporation address
In a research note detailing its response to the government's consultation, Hall argued that it should include not just all companies which are incorporated or listed on a UK stock exchange, but also overseas incorporated companies. Hall said that one of the key considerations in building the ISA should be simplicity in order to ensure that more people sign up to the ISA and «ensure „optimum eligibility“ for assets included. Managers sceptical GB ISA will provide 'catalyst' for fresh UK investment „We recommend that this should not be dependent on location or incorporation, to ensu...

India considers incentives for lithium processing
India is considering offering incentives to encourage private companies to set up lithium processing facilities, as New Delhi tries to develop its nascent lithium mining and boost supplies of the EV battery metal, three government sources said. It would offer incentives to companies to set up lithium processing plants under a new critical minerals policy that was being worked out by the mines ministry, the sources said. «The critical minerals policy will be comprehensive and will cover all aspects from exploration to mining to value addition,» one of the sources said. «It will also cover incentives for beneficiation and refining within the country,» the source said. The sources, however, said it was a little early to know the exact form of incentives the government would offer, but New Delhi would try to take a cue from countries such as Australia and Canada. Responding to Reuters queries, the Ministry of Mines said the government was taking various steps to ensure the availability of critical minerals for the downstream industry. It did not elaborate.

Nearly 12 pc of India's eligible children received no dose of measles vaccine, study finds
children in India who are eligible for measles vaccination have received none of the recommended double-dose, signalling a «concerning gap» in immunisation coverage, a new study has found. The findings showed that zero-dose cases were high in the northeastern states, with Nagaland reporting the greatest share at 26 per cent. Tamil Nadu was found to report the lowest at 4.6 per cent. Researchers from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi investigated previously overlooked critical aspects of measles vaccination, focusing on zero-doses, partially vaccinated, and those fully immunised. They analysed data of over 43,000 children aged 2-3 years, collected through the National Family Health Survey 2019-21 (NFHS-5). The team found that close to 30 per cent of the eligible children have received only one measles-containing vaccine (MCV1), while about 60 per cent have been fully immunised (MCV2). The findings are published in the journal Vaccine.

Worrying vaccination gaps come to notice after post-Covid measles spurt forces a data relook
National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) by researchers has found that more than one in nine eligible children nationally did not get any dose of the measles vaccine in the 2019-21 period, and that nearly 30 per cent received just a single dose, ToI reported on May 9. A relook at the survey data was necessitated by instances of repeated measles outbreaks after the COVID-19 pandemic, the report by (by Rema Nagarajan) said. The researchers involved in the relook were from health ministry's immunisation division, Banaras Hindu University and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

I have often written of the ethical and philosophical impact of AI and how it will shape our future. Now I focus on how AI has reshaped a category which touches our daily lives: e-commerce. AI researcher and entrepreneur Andrew Ng termed AI the “new electricity." Like a general purpose technology, it will power society and multiple businesses silently and behind the scenes.
