7.0 earthquake rattles Northern California and prompts brief tsunami warning
Authorities said they were surveying for signs of damage. The closest city to the epicenter, Ferndale, has a population of about 1,300 people; the quake was also felt more than 200 miles to the south in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sacramento Valley to the east. The National Weather Service briefly issued a tsunami warning in coastal counties in Northern California and southern Oregon, telling residents to head inland or for high ground, but it canceled the alert about an hour after the quake occurred.
