View: New Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol could finally tame Howard Schultz
Starbucks Corp. CEO Brian Niccol is a star executive who is widely considered the best in the business. Quite frankly, it’s surprising the company was able to hire him. Despite the coffee giant being one off the world’s most iconic and powerful brands, Starbucks has a problem for any incoming CEO. And that problem is named Howard Schultz. As Starbucks’ longtime CEO who became synonymous with the company he all but founded, Schultz can’t seem to let go. He’s twice boomeranged back into the top job when the company hit turbulence. And since he departed from the board a year ago, he has become a meddler — criticizing his successor Laxman Narasimhan and the board in a LinkedIn post and on a podcast, even though he handpicked Narasimhan, trained him and set an aggressive growth plan on his way out the door.

Delhi HC Judge recuses from hearing plea moved by conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar
Delhi High Court's Justice Subramonium Prasad on Wednesday recused himself from hearing the plea filed by alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, seeking additional meetings in jail with his lawyers. The recusal was due to the multiple legal cases against Chandrasekhar, which could potentially present a conflict of interest or require a different judicial perspective. Sukesh Chandrashekhar through a plea requested permission to increase his meetings with his legal counsel to five times a week. This request sought an additional three meetings beyond the two meetings per week currently allowed. To support his request, Chandrashekar referred to the Arvind Kejriwal case where he was granted five weekly meetings with his council.

SC diktat on past dues of mines will adversely impact job creation, lead to NPAs: Chakri Lokapriya
Chakri Lokapriya, Managing Partner, RSB LLP, says the current Supreme Court ruling on mines, allowing states to collect past dues will mean an outgo of about Rs 60,000 crore for just the PSUs and another Rs 1 lakh crore for the private companies. So, Rs 1,60,000 crore will need to be repaid over the next 10-12 years. Now, that completely takes away the capital expense that these companies plan for the next many years, which means the jobs that they were going to create and the NPAs that they will create in the banking system, have multi-ramifications right from job creation to NPAs. Insurance over the last couple of months has become quite interesting for investors because the overhang seems to be over. Do you still think the story is not fully discovered and priced in or do you think perhaps the best is in price already now? Chakri Lokapriya: I think the price hikes largely reflect the increased costs that they are mandated to do. Now, they have to cover the existing ailments, and also, the price revisions faced by the insurance companies are periodic versus other prices, like medical costs, which are going up continually. All things adjusted, I do not think 7-10% price hikes will take care of the risks and the cost increases, but not add to the profitability.

Bangladesh crisis: Cong MLA urges PM Modi not to hesitate to take action like Indira did in 1971
Karnataka Congress legislator on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to hesitate to take decisive military action like former PM late Indira Gandhi did in 1971. Rizwan Arshad, who represents Shivajinagar Assembly constituency in Bengaluru, in a letter to Modi, also appealed to him to take «decisive action» to not only address concerns of minorities in Bangladesh but also in India, who have been under «constant attack both economically and socially by the right wing.» «I write to you today as a concerned citizen of India deeply distressed by the recent reports and videos circulating on social media, highlighting the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh and the atrocities being reported against Hindu minorities in the region,» Arshad said.

Should PSUs be considered an essential part of portfolio? Vikas Khemani answers
Vikas Khemani, Founder, Carnelian Asset Management, says in the last 10 years, we have seen a remarkable shift in the accountability and governance and the execution of the PSEs and that has made many of these public sector enterprises very valuable. Banks are moving towards 16-17% ROE profiles. All public sector units in defence are doing very well with the new refound growth sector. All PSUs except probably oil and marketing, still have a bit of a struggle. That is also picking up, but whether it is gas or any other, the PSUs are being run reasonably well. While BSNL is still facing challenges, we have seen a remarkable shift happening in the railway operation.

Understanding professional tax: What every employee and self-employed individual should know
The other day, I was sitting withtwo of myfriends—one a consultant and the other an employee—when the conversation turned to taxes. My colleague, an employee, was surprised to learn that he had been paying a professional tax of ₹200 every month, automatically deducted from his salary by his employer. The consultant, on the other hand, was fully aware of this tax, as he had to handle the payments himself.

LIC sees red over policy 'trading' by ACESO, to take legal action
Life Insurance Corporation of India is preparing for a second legal battle over trading in insurance policies, something the insurance behemoth says is illegal, arguing that such transactions threaten to hit at the root of the industry and expose policy buyers to losses. India's biggest insurer is seeking to challenge legally the campaign by ACESO, a company that claims to be an asset monetiser and focused on buying up LIC policies, said officials aware of the plans. It is luring policyholders to transfer their rights to it for a consideration instead of surrendering them. ACESO, founded by two chartered accountants — Ketan Mehta and Himanshu Ashar — is offering ALIP or Assign Your Life Insurance Policy. This it says is based on a legal contract which is permissible under the law. It brings double benefits to those involved in the insurance policy — the agents and the policyholder. When assigned, ACESO is said to be paying more than what LIC would have paid and the continuity of commissions for agents.

Karnataka govt to seek to vacate court stay against implementation of Chamundeshwari Act
Chamundeshwari Kshetra Development Authority Act of 2024. The High Court had temporarily stayed the implementation of the Act, after a member of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family — Pramoda Devi Wadiyar — challenged its legality. Passed in February, the Act aims to provide for the constitution of an independent statutory authority to undertake the work of «development and maintenance» of 'Shree Chamundeshwari Kshethra'. «We will try to vacate the High Court stay legally,» Siddaramaiah told reporters in Koppal district in response to a question on the High Court stay.
