Bangladesh Hindu leaders say 278 locations attacked since Hasina fled
The minority Hindu population has faced vandalisation of their business and properties and devastation of Hindu temples in the students' violence that ensued for days following the ouster of prime minister Hasina, who soon fled to India on August 5. The Alliance's press conference took place on the same day as Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who took charge as Chief Advisor of the interim government on August 8, reached out to the distressed Hindu community members at the famous Dhakeshwari Temple here earlier in the day and urged the people to «exercise patience» before judging his government's role.

India to offer incentives for critical minerals extraction, govt source says
critical minerals industry. The funding illustrates the efforts India is making to get the critical mineral industry off the ground and cut the country's near-total reliance on imports of lithium and rare earths mineral that are key to energy transition technologies. So far, India's attempts to create a critical minerals mining industry have faltered. The country awarded development rights in June to a lithium block in Chhattisgarh state but a separate attempt to auction lithium blocks in Jammu and Kashmir found no takers because of low mineral concentration and high extraction costs.

Delhi HC asks Centre to clear its stand on PIL challenging exclusion of provision for unnatural sex in new criminal laws
Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to clarify its position on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) which stated that the new criminal laws Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) lacks a provision equivalent to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Section 377 had previously criminalized «sodomy» and "unnatural sex," but was partially decriminalized by the Supreme Court in 2018, stated the plea. The bench, led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and including Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, has given the Union of India's counsel ten days to take instructions on the grievance raised in the PIL and fixed the matter for further hearing on August 27, 2024.

3 pharma stocks Meghana Malkan is bullish on for near term
«So, broadly, unless we have some trigger taking the market into a different zone, broadly, I see Nifty moving in this range and so is with Bank Nifty. The momentum says, right now, we are broadly into the sideways zone,» says Meghana Malkan, malkansview.com. What are your thoughts on the market? Let us talk about benchmarks first, Nifty, Bank Nifty, the levels you have on your radar and then a word on the broader markets as well. Meghana Malkan: Broadly, let us talk about Nifty first. So, key technical parameters if we look at, RSI, look at candle patterns, broadly price and momentum play, seems like we are in a consolidation phase. So, when I see the Nifty charts, 24,550 to 24,600 seems like a broader support where we could move on the higher side, the range of the consolidation and on the lower side, I think 23,900 is where we could be capped at the downside.

US will continue to monitor situation in Bangladesh, says White House
White House said, emphasising that President Joe Biden is «consistent in speaking loud and clear» on human rights issues. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was responding to questions regarding calls from Hindu-American groups and Indian-American lawmakers seeking the US government's intervention in protecting the lives and properties of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. «We are certainly going to continue monitoring the situation. I don't have anything else to add beyond that. But, when it comes to any type of human rights issues, the president (Joe Biden) has been very consistent in speaking loud and clear in public and also privately and he'll continue to do that,» Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Monday. Over the past few days, hundreds of Hindu-Americans in various US cities have been holding peaceful protest rallies against the alleged human rights violations of the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Attractive buy, good long-term investment: Sunil Mittal on Bharti's stake acquisition in BT
Sunil Mittal on Monday said the conglomerate's decision to acquire a 24.5 per cent stake in BT Group marks a «good, long-term investment» and an «attractive buy», citing the British company's strong portfolio of home broadband, fibre, mobile and enterprise offerings. Mittal, a telecom industry stalwart, exuded confidence about the investment and business prospects of BT and indicated that while the priority, for now, is to understand the company and the UK market in-depth, «if there are more opportunities in Europe, we will certainly be open to it in future». On Bharti's decision to buy a 24.5 per cent stake in BT Group — a move that would make it the single largest shareholder in Britain's largest broadband and mobile company — Mittal said: «I think this is a very attractive buy… the UK and European telecom companies are trading at low multiples...so given the cash flow expectations of BT, we believe this is going to be a good investment, and it is a long-term investment.
