One way to turbocharge the Chinese economy
hongben, or red booklets, as proof of ownership. These look just like urban-property certificates. In one village, however, residents are unable to produce them—they say they are being stored by the village authorities (a clue, probably, to who really controls the rights).

Citizens can't be made to run from pillar to post in matters of life, liberty: SC on Sisodia bail
life and liberty which is one of the most sacrosanct rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the Supreme Court said on Friday. The apex court rejected the preliminary objection raised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that AAP leader Manish Sisodia cannot be permitted to file second set of special leave petitions to challenge the Delhi High Court's May 21 verdict which denied him bail in the excise policy cases. While granting bail to Sisodia in the corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, the top court noted the counsel appearing for probe agencies had argued that he should be relegated to approach the trial court afresh for seeking relief. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan referred to the apex court's June 4 order which had disposed of Sisodia's plea challenging the high court verdict. The top court had then said that Sisodia can revive his bail petitions after the ED and CBI file their final prosecution complaint and charge sheet respectively.

Mohammad Yunus: A well-known critic of Sheikh Hasina now heads Bangladesh's interim govt
Professor Mohammad Yunus, a well-known critic of Sheikh Hasina and persecuted by her regime, when the Nobel laureate became the head of the caretaker government after she resigned and fled to India. The 84-year-old economist, globally recognised as 'The Father of Microfinance,' who flew down from Paris earlier in the day, was declared as the head of the interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin after dissolving Parliament Tuesday, a decision prompted by a demand by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Yunus had announced plans to form a political party in 2007 when the country was run by a military-backed government and criticised Bangladeshi politicians alleging they were only interested in money. He, however, did not follow through on that plan. By a quirk of fate, on Thursday he took oath to lead a non-partisan, non-military caretaker government.

Warner Bros Discovery writes down TV assets by $9 billion amid uncertainty over fees, sports rights renewals
Warner Bros Discovery said on Wednesday it wrote down the value of its TV assets due to the uncertainty of fees from cable and satellite distributors and sports rights renewals, sending its shares down nearly 10% in extended trading. The film and entertainment studio, which owns sports network TNT and streaming service Max, recorded a $9.1 billion non-cash goodwill charge in the second quarter. This charge, stemming from a reassessment of the assets' value since the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, contributed to a $10 billion net loss for the quarter. The media landscape has significantly changed in the past two years, impacting valuations and expectations for traditional media companies and this current situation is reflected in the write down, CEO David Zaslav said in a call with analysts.

Ashutosh Bhargava on 3 key themes that can outperform this year
«On the NBFC side, we are more positive on, I would say, non-consumer NBFCs which are more catered towards CV cycle or power sector and we are also diversifying within financials towards non-lenders like insurance, this is one sector where we think this is ripe for some kind of outperformance over the next two to three years,» says Ashutosh Bhargava, Nippon India Mutual Fund. A quick view on the way policy pared out today. There was expectation that there would be some stance change at least, that did not happen, forget about the rates but it appeared that the governor was very steadfast on controlling inflation and some commentary again on top-up loans and deposits continues to remain an issue. What were your key observations from the policy commentary today? Ashutosh Bhargava: So, going into this policy, it is not that there was a consensus of a rate cut, but there was definitely an expectation of some change in stance towards more neutral, but that has not happened. It seems that the RBI is very focused on this 4% inflation target and overlooking already below 4% core inflation.
