SKM welcomes Bharat Ratna for Charan Singh, Swaminathan, slams govt for not keeping MSP promise
Samyukt Kisan Morcha on Saturday welcomed the conferring of Bharat Ratna on Chaudhary Charan Singh and MS Swaminathan but termed it an attempt to divert people's attention from government's failure to provide Minimum Support Price for crops as suggested by the Swaminathan committee. In a statement, the SKM also said Singh and Swaminathan will remain alive in people's memory for their contribution to farmers even without a Bharat Ratna and «denounced» Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to solve the crisis of farmers of India. «SKM welcomes BJP government's late recognition of Chaudhary Charan Singh and due recognition of Dr. MS Swaminathan for their contribution to agriculture and farmers in conferring Bharat Ratna on them. While Chaudhary Charan Singh had a role in implementation of Zamindari Abolition in UP leading to ownership rights for peasantry, as the Chairman of the National Farmers' Commission, Dr. MS Swaminathan made recommendations for income guarantee to farmers,» the SKM said in a statement. «However, the Modi government is honouring and decorating the leaders only to cheat the farmers and people. The PM has neither honesty nor sincerity and indulged in a poor vote catching gimmick intended to worsen farmers' misery and use tokenism to camouflage his services to big corporate forces associated with foreign companies in farming,» it said.

NASA spots Super-Earth, says ‘right temperature for water to form’. But is it habitable?
NASA said, "That’s the distance from the star that could give the planet the right temperature for liquid water to form on its surface." However, “Several other factors would have to line up, of course, for surface water to be present, especially having a suitable atmosphere." TOI-715 b orbits closely to its star in 19 days. However, scientists don't think its a hellish as unlike other hot exoplanets, its star, a red dwarf, is cooler and smaller than the Sun, suggesting different conditions. Researchers published the planet's detection in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Lok Sabha Polls: People will bless BJP with 370 seats as it abrogated Article 370; NDA to get over 400 seats, says Amit Shah
Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The BJP will get 370 seats and the NDA more than 400 in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and form the government for a third consecutive term under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said here on Saturday. Shah asserted that there is no suspense over the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls and even the Congress and other opposition parties have realised that they will again have to sit in the opposition benches. «We have abrogated Article 370 (of the Constitution, which gave a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir). So we believe that the people of the country will bless the BJP with 370 seats and the NDA with over 400 seats,» Shah said at the ET NOW Global Business Summit 2024. Asked about the possibility of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), headed by Jayant Choudhary, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and some other regional parties joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the home minister said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) «believes in family planning but not in politics», giving an indication that more parties may join the ruling coalition.

Investors start to shun small and midcaps, but then fall for another poor idea
money flowing into small cap and midcap funds has declined significantly (down 20%). And on the other hand, the fund flows into thematic/sectoral funds have increased dramatically (up over 80%). I am sure you can guess the themes and sectors that are pulling in all the money! Here’s what the Economist has to say on such sectoral/thematic funds: In 2022 Itzhak Ben-David, Francesco Franzoni, Byungwook Kim and Rabih Moussawi, four academics, published research suggesting that thematic equityETFs, which attempt to track a narrow industry or trend, underperform broaderETFs by about a third over the five years after their launch. That is because of a straightforward problem: when thematicETFs get going, the buzz around the investment is already extensive and the underlying assets are already pricey. In effect, while the retail investor may have got one thing right – incrementallyreduce exposure to small and midcaps, she has pivoted to investing in another poor investment idea i.e.

Reliance Consumer Products acquires Ravalgaon's confectionery brands for Rs 27 crore
Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL) has acquired the trademarks, recipes, and all intellectual property rights of sugar-boiled confectionery maker Ravalgaon for Rs 27 crore, according to a stock market disclosure by Ravalgaon Sugar Farm Ltd. Ravalgaon owns nine confectionery brands such as Pan Pasand and Coffee Break. This fits RCPL's strategy of acquiring old Indian brands which are under distress and relaunching them, like it had acquired the Campa soft drink brand. The deed was signed between both the parties on Friday. It excludes the slump sale of all assets and liabilities of Ravalgaon. “It is clarified that while 100% of the revenue of the company (Ravalgaon) is ascribed to the intellectual property being sold, the company will continue to hold all other assets such as property, land, plant, building, equipment, machinery, etc. post completion of the proposed transaction,” as per the disclosure.

Wrong turn taken by lightheaded brigade
Light Brigade': 'Cannon to right of them/ Cannon to left of them,/ Cannon in front of them/ Volleyed and thundered.../ Rode the six hundred.' But, this week, in Tennyson's words, 'someone had blundered' within the economic law enforcement agency.

Google Pay, PhonePe two 'ticking' time bombs, says LS member Supriya Sule
NCP MP Supriya Sule on Friday alleged that apps like Google Pay and PhonePe are «two ticking time bombs» and sought to know what steps the government is taking to check money laundering. Participating in a discussion on 'The White Paper on Indian economy' in Lok Sabha, Sule said whatever happened in Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) is «very alarming» and is almost like money laundering. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last month directed PPBL to stop accepting deposits or top-ups in customer accounts, wallets, FASTags and other instruments after February 29.
