America faces a Trumpian economic slowdown
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. “The golden age of America begins right now." So declared Donald Trump on January 20th in his inaugural address. In the six weeks since that chilly day, investors and economists have started to grapple with a less upbeat possibility: that his arrival in the White House is both causing and coinciding with a period of weakness for America’s economy.

As a daughter, a wife or a mother, why you must stay up to date about your inheritance rights?
A Hindu wife, being a class I heir, has an equal right to her deceased husband’s property, along with children and the husband’s mother. A married Hindu woman also has exclusive rights to her individual property. She is the sole owner and manager of her assets whether these are earned, inherited or gifted during the wedding (streedhan). A Muslim wife without any children is entitled to one-fourth share of her husband’s property, but those with kids get one-eighth the share. In case of divorce, her parental family has to provide maintenance after the iddat period (about three months). DaughterUnder the

As unsecured loans surge so does demand for collection agents
Demand for loan collection agents, or temporary manpower often deployed to chase sticky advances, has climbed more than 30% in the past six months, TeamLease data shared with ET showed, pointing to the mounting pile of doubtful unsecured retail advances at lenders that now need specialised recovery support. TeamLease, which manages more than 85,000 frontline employees in areas such as sales, customer care, and field operations, has recruited up to 7,000 new collection agents for banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), credit card firms, microfinance institutions, and fintech companies. «This is a direct result of the challenges we've seen in the unsecured loan segment, and as a result, the demand for collection agents has increased by over 30%,» said Krishnendu Chatterjee, VP and business head, TeamLease Services. «In many cases, lenders have shifted sales roles into collection roles.» The central bank increased risk weights on unsecured loans to reduce systemic risks, and to prevent a further increase in potential stress in bank balance sheets since retail segment was at vanguard of credit demand lately.

Varun Chakravarthy gives India 'good headache' ahead of Champions Trophy semis
Varun Chakravarthy on Sunday became a «good headache» for India ahead of their Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia after his match-winning five-wicket haul against New Zealand, said captain Rohit Sharma. Mystery spinner Chakravarthy returned figures of 5-42 in Dubai to help India beat New Zealand in their last group match of the 50-over tournament. His recent 14 wickets in a 4-1 T20 series win over England at home got Chakravarthy back into the India reckoning in the white-ball formats and he was a last-minute addition to the Champions Trophy squad.

Kiwis fall to Varun Chakravarthy: India stay unbeaten, set for semis vs Australia
But, the hero of India’s day, Varun Chakravarty, with 5 for 42, ensured that India defended a middling score with some ease. Varun was not part of India’s 50-over set up till recently and the fact that he got so few chances left him wondering if he was even in the scheme of things, from a big-picture point of view.

Rework India’s investment treaty framework to attract FDI flows
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. The Indian budget announcement of a revamped model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) to make it more investor-friendly is a delayed acknowledgement of the framework having failed to achieve its core objectives. Since its adoption in 2015, India has signed agreements with only five countries—Belarus (2018), Kyrgyzstan (2019), Brazil (2020), the UAE (2024) and Uzbekistan (2024), highlighting challenges in securing BITs with key trade partners and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) flows.

Naomi Klein’s ‘Doppelganger’ is a mirror to our world’s absurdity
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. If you want a one-liner to put on a T-shirt that sums up the spirit of the times we are living in, I bet you can’t find a better one than this droll sentence from the late Philip Roth’s 1993 novel, Operation Shylock: “It’s too ridiculous to take seriously and too serious to be ridiculous." I stumbled upon it in writer and activist Naomi Klein’s 2023 book, Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, where this quote runs like a refrain, much like an anthem you may hum under your breath every time you are scrolling through the internet, especially if you are looking for news or information that is reliably true.

PDP's Waheed Para submits 'anti-bulldozer' land bill in J&K Assembly
People's Democratic Party legislator Waheed Para has submitted a private member’s bill for the upcoming assembly session in Jammu & Kashmir seeking property rights for people who have been living on state land for decades. The legislator from Pulwama in southern Kashmir has termed the proposed legislation an anti-bulldozer bill that will save homes and shelters of people living on state land, common land or any other land for several decades but for which they don't have the property rights. Para said the proposed legislation will not only secure people’s homes but also reduce the fear of eviction. He calls it an 'anti-bulldozer' bill that will save people from harrasment and forced evictions from the land they were living on for decades.
