Which are the areas of the market where risk reward is very juicy even now? Vinay Jaising answers
Vinay Jaising, MD, JM Financial Services, says “we are still a lot more comfortable in a lot of mid and smallcap names wherein we are seeing earnings visibility leading to earnings growth drivers. If earlier you had an EPS of a company which was X and that is going up by 20 to 25%, your new PE may not be as high as what you are expecting. So for us, it is all about bottom-up fishing and looking at stocks where valuations are not expensive. Is valuation becoming a bit of an issue now for your stock picking process because I am sure the flows are good and plus your existing portfolio would also be expanding due to market going higher? How are you dealing with the challenge of rising valuations? Vinay Jaising: As you put it, valuations are close to peak for many stocks. People say largecap valuations are a little cheaper than what they were in the past or on a relative basis, you know, probably cheaper. If I would take the Nifty50 and take the seven largecap stocks which grew, I would say, at much lower rates last year of 7-8%, rest of the 43 stocks grew by over 30%. So valuations all over are an issue.

Devang Mehta on what themes work best for him in pharma space
Devang Mehta, Director — Equity Advisory, Spark Private Wealth, says “there are a couple of themes in the pharma space where we have been bullish through the last 6-9 months. These have been MNC pharma companies like Abbot India. These companies probably command a huge market share. These companies are sort of cash cows and work with a negative working capital cycle. These companies never get into fracas with USFDA. Most of these companies come up with not only a great set of earnings but also the margins are very impressive. The other stream of business which we like is the CRAM space where something like a Syngine operates.” What are your thoughts on Polycab or if you are unable to talk about exactly on Polycab, some of these large wires and cable companies who in the last 5-7 years, have shown earnings growth and have made a place for themselves in this sector? Devang Mehta: We have been liking the space so, particularly would not like to name any stock as such. But with the plethora of businesses in the wire and cable space, these companies have developed themselves from a normal cable and wire company which was a commoditized type of business, to branded businesses with pricing power. Some of these brands are very well-known in the market for Havells, for Polycab, for RR Kabel.

ETMarkets Smart Talk: India in a sweet spot; we expect higher allocations from FIIs in 2024: Alok Agarwal
“We expect much higher allocations from FIIs this year. India is in a sweet spot with clear visibility of growth and credible shock absorbers,” says Alok Agarwal, Head-Quant & Portfolio Manager, Alchemy Capital Management. In an interview with ETMarkets, Agarwal said: “We expect domestic defence capex to be a structural theme for the next few years at least. Railways in India have been age-old and requiring attention,” Edited excerpts: The market seems to have climbed all walls of worries to hit fresh highs in the first week of January 2024. But the voice is getting louder both domestic and global that these valuations are unsustainable. What do you take? Alok Agarwal: The Nifty50 is currently trading at a one-year forward P/E ratio of 21.9x – this is about 24% premium to the last 10-year average valuations, although about 5% below the peak seen in Oct’21.

Redesigned Apple Watches not subject to import ban, US Customs says
Apple can use a redesign to bypass an import ban on newer Apple Watch models stemming from its patent infringement dispute with medical-monitoring technology company Masimo, according to a Monday court filing. The import ban, issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), applies to Apple's current Series 9 and Ultra 2 watches and initially went into effect on Dec. 26. Apple convinced a U.S. appeals court to pause the ban the next day, and has since resumed selling the watches as it contests the import ruling.
