Airlines to ramp up tech, training to handle customers during flight disruption
call centres are some of the steps Indian airlines are looking to implement to regain flier confidence following recent flight disruptions that caused significant inconvenience to passengers. Airlines are also calling for changes in security rules which mandate a passenger to undergo airport security checks again if they are disembarked in case of a delay. Thick fog and a non-operational runway in India’s busiest airport at Delhi severely disrupted flight schedules this winter as airline crews struggled to deal with passengers upset with delayed or cancelled flights. For instance, a passenger on-board an IndiGo airline aircraft pilot punched the pilot after the flight was delayed by over four hours. Following the incident, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia warned airlines to improve their efficiency or risk losing customers. Budget airline Akasa Air has built-in technology features in its app which gives real time information on flight changes to passengers. “As we scale up, we are ensuring that we leverage technology for information like flight delays, gate changes immediately and transparently to our customers,” said Belson Coutinho, co-founder and chief marketing and experience officer at Akasa Air. Coutinho said Akasa Air is analysing the recent incidents at Delhi Airport to improve the airline’s SOP and incorporate the learnings into its own training module. Vimal Kumar Rai, managing partner at Commercial Excellence Partners which advises organisations on customer experience said that airlines need to set up a process where crew has a mindset of ownership and accountability.

North Korea's AI development raises sanctions concerns, report says
North Korea is developing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for everything from how to respond to COVID-19 and safeguard nuclear reactors to wargaming simulations and government surveillance, according to a new study. International sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons program may have hindered North Korea's attempts to secure AI hardware, but it appears to be pursuing the latest technology, wrote study author Hyuk Kim of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in California.

GIFT City’s lenders are now banking on FDs to lure NRIs
Mint that the response to the scheme from NRIs has been overwhelmingly good. “The response from the customers is also very good and we see good traction getting built up, as customers have the flexibility of planning their short-term cash flows starting from 7 days, which is a unique feature that customers can’t get in the FCNR (B) deposits at the domestic branches," said the Federal Bank spokesperson. Earlier, most of these banks relied mainly on institutional depositors and borrowings from their parent companies for capital requirements.

It is time to follow Sebi’s lead on online dispute resolution
Over the past decade-and-a-half, I’ve had the good fortune of having witnessed India’s rapid digitization from the sidelines. As exciting as it has been to see this transformation from up close, I’ve felt a mild sense of unease about what will happen if things go wrong. Given how frustratingly analogue our dispute resolution process is, it will matter little that we have streamlined our commercial interactions if we still settle disagreements the old-fashioned way.
