A gallery that tells why antique textiles are living traditions only in India
phulkari embroidery, cholis with kaanchi (mirror embroidery) from Gujarat, brocade on quilt covers and saris, tie-and-dye odhanis, Naga shawls, jamdanis, telia rumal from Andhra Pradesh and batik rumal from West Bengal—all introducing the viewer to ancient textiles starting from the 18th century. (Unlike painting, when it comes to textiles, something that belongs to 18th century is considered ancient, because cloth is more delicate and tends to perish faster.) Then the gallery takes a turn into the modernisation of traditional textiles, highlighting pieces from the Vishwakarma exhibitions, led by the late Martand Singh from the 1970s onwards. These shows were a series of seven textile art and history exhibitions from 1982-92 that documented the introduction of design to crafts communities.

Get tough: A lenient capital gains tax regime has been distorting incentives
The recent budget presented by the finance minister saw a spurt of adverse commentary on the proposals relating to capital gains transactions, particularly with reference to the removal of indexation benefits. In response, the government partially restored the benefits to a segment of taxpayers.

UK economy grows 0.6% in Q2 2024
Britain's economy grew 0.6% in the second quarter of 2024, official figures showed on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast an expansion of 0.6%, building on a rapid 0.7% recovery in the first quarter of the year from a shallow recession in the second half of 2023. At the start of the month the Bank of England raised its annual growth forecast for 2024 to 1.25% from 0.5% due to a stronger-than-expected start to the year and an expectation of 0.7% quarter-on-quarter growth in the three months to June.

In volatile election season, US companies battle 'brand disinformation'
Google to Netflix, prominent US companies are battling internet boycott calls over their perceived political leanings in a polarising election season that has exposed them to what researchers call "brand disinformation." The online campaigns, which falsely claim both Netflix and Google are funding or favoring Democratic nominee Kamala Harris ahead of the November election, illustrate how brands are vulnerable to political falsehoods that can expose them to financial perils. Those calling for a boycott, researchers say, include fake accounts on the platform X. The site is owned by Elon Musk, who has endorsed Donald Trump and appears to exert an outsized influence on voters through the platform, which has become a hotbed of disinformation.

Is inflation whipped now?
The financial press is cheering that Wednesday’s inflation report makes an interest-rate cut next month a fait accompli. Go, Jay, go. Yet while cooling inflation shows that the Federal Reserve’s monetary medicine is working, Chairman Jerome Powell’s caution to date has been warranted.

How anti-dumping duty on Chinese EVs affects India
Chinese EVs and Indian container shortage have in common? In one word, everything. With the US imposing a 100% anti-dumping duty on Chinese electric vehicles from August 1 and several countries in Europe planning to follow suit in September and October, the Chinese EV industry has been on production overdrive to ship as many vehicles as possible before the duty deadline. This pile up of inventory has clogged an already stretched logistics network. Siddharth Jairaj, CEO, TVS SCS global forwarding solutions said, “Because of the anti-dumping duties, China has been shipping out huge numbers of electric vehicles since April and May to beat the duty deadlines. So global nodal ports like Singapore and Colombo and clogged.” As containers are being diverted to cater to “Chinese inventory, the port congestion is spreading and has now hit India too,” he added.

"Some cannot tolerate India's progress unless it benefits them": PM Modi's indirect dig at opposition in I-Day speech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an indirect attack on the opposition, said on Wednesday that while the nation is moving forward with a unified resolution, some people cannot «tolerate» the progress. «We are moving forward with the same resolution, but there are some people who cannot tolerate progress or think of India's progress unless it benefits them. They want anarchy. The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people,» the Prime Minister said during his address from the Red Fort on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day. PM Modi noted that there are both external and internal challenges, and more such challenges are bound to come. «I want to say to such forces that India's development will not pose a threat to anyone. The world should not worry seeing India's development,» he added.

Survey shows disaster-prone Southeast Asia is also best prepared, suggesting lessons can be learned
Southeast Asia is among the regions most prone to natural disasters, but a new analysis released Thursday shows its people also feel the best equipped to deal with them. It seems logical that the countries in and around the Pacific Ring of Fire, vulnerable to earthquakes, typhoons, storm surges and other dangers, are also the best prepared, but the survey by Gallup for the Lloyd's Register Foundation shows that's not always the case in other regions. «Frequent exposure to hazard isn't the only factor that determines how prepared people feel,» Benedict Vigers, a research consultant with Gallup, told The Associated Press.

US Inflation falls to 3-year low, clearing the way for Fed to begin cutting rates
inflation reached its lowest level in more than three years in July, the latest sign that the worst price spike in four decades is fading and setting up the Federal Reserve for an interest rate cut in September. Wednesday's report from the Labor Department showed that consumer prices rose just 0.2% from June to July after dropping slightly the previous month for the first time in four years. Measured from a year earlier, prices rose 2.9%, down from 3% in June. It was the mildest year-over-year inflation figure since March 2021.

3 sectors that may give you freedom from worries this Independence Day
Siddhartha Khemka, Head-Retail Research, MOFSL, says there is very strong liquidity from the domestic flows – be it the DIIs, HNIs, retail investors and that is what we are also seeing in some of the IPOs that have come out. We would also see the appetite from the institutional side, both domestic and foreign, for the bulk of OFS or blogs that promoters or PE funds have sold. There is a humongous demand for some of these papers. That only shows that the appetite for the right quality of company and the right business is pretty strong in the market. Why are we seeing so much of strength? Everybody is saying valuations are expensive, valuations are stretched, do not invest, save, do not invest, sit on cash, but markets are not coming down. Siddhartha Khemka: If you look at the markets, yes, definitely a case of strong liquidity is supporting the sentiments and the indices as well. But what is also supporting so far has been the strong macros that have withstood the global headwinds and that continues to be the case which kind of makes a positive case going forward as well.
