Food on boil, inflation rises to 4-month high of 5.08% in June; May factory output highest since October
inflation rose to a four-month high of 5.08%, faster than expected, from 4.8% in May, with food inflation flaring up to a six-month high of 9.36%, data released Friday showed. Inflation, as measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 4.87% in June and food inflation was 4.55% in the year earlier. An ET poll last week had pegged retail inflation at 4.7%. The simultaneously released Index of Industrial Production (IIP) showed factory output grew at a seven-month high of 5.9% in May, according to data from the ministry of statistics. Near-term Rate Action Unlikely Industrial production grew 5% in April 2024 and 5.7% in May last year. “A weak start to the southwest monsoon in June and prolonged heatwave impacted vegetable prices, in turn pushing food and beverages inflation back above 8%,” said Radhika Rao, senior economist, DBS Bank.

Australian businesses dipping into savings, but arrears still low
SYDNEY—Australian businesses are dipping into savings to cover day-to-day running costs and repay debts amid higher-for-longer rates, but arrears remain low for now, the head of business banking at the country’s largest lender said. Like households, businesses built up cash buffers during the pandemic, and strong post-Covid demand supported business profitability. Recent Australian regulator data cited by UBS showed overall bank deposits fell in May, with an uptick in household savings being more than offset by contracting business and government deposits.

Pakistan will continue to seek IMF bailouts if it fails to boost tax revenue: Finance minister
Pakistan Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has warned that the cash-strapped country will continue to seek IMF bailouts if it fails to boost tax revenue, according to a media report on Monday. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader in an interview with the the UK-based Financial Times newspaper said that he was «relatively confident» of reaching a staff-level agreement with the Washington-based global lender this month for an estimated loan of USD 6-8 billion. Aurangzeb, however, said, «It will not be our last fund programme if we don't bring our tax revenues up.» Last month, the federal government passed the tax-laden Rs 18,877 billion budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, amidst protests from the Opposition which labelled it as an International Monetary Fund-driven document that was harmful to the public.

Rishi Sunak's campaign to stay British PM showed his lack of political touch
Rishi Sunak's campaign to remain Britain's prime minister showed a lack of political touch. The Conservative Party's problems were grave before Friday's resounding election defeat but missteps by Britain's richest prime minister contributed to its defeat. Predecessors such as Tony Blair and Boris Johnson were more politically astute and able to connect with voters. As for Sunak, he didn't have to call the election until Jan. 2025. He defied political advice by doing so in May — with Conservative support dwindling steadily amid an economic slump, ethics scandals and a revolving door of leaders over the last two years — and announced the July 4 date in the pouring rain.
