Climate change continues to ravage Africa, which is enduring extreme weather and natural disasters on an unprecedented scale. My own country, Kenya, has just emerged from its longest drought on record, only to suffer devastating floods, which have killed 289 people and affected more than 800,000. Meanwhile, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe recently experienced a severe drought that exposed millions of people to hunger, and the Sahel region was hit by a debilitating heatwave, resulting in more than 100 deaths in Mali.

New Brunswick premier bans sex ed group from schools over ‘inappropriate’ presentation
Blaine Higgs says he is banning a Quebec-based sexual education organization from sharing information in provincial schools after what he called an “inappropriate” presentation in high schools. In a lengthy post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Higgs says he’s heard from concerned parents who shared photos and screenshots of presentation material from Montreal-based sexual education group Thirsty for the Talk, an online resource created by HPV Global Action.A photo Higgs shared on social media as part of the thread shows a presentation slide with questions like: “Do girls masturbate?” and “Does it hurt when you do it for the first time?” among others. He says the Department of Education told him the presentation was supposed to be about Human Papillomavirus and the group shared materials beyond that scope.HPV Global Action’s president Teresa Norris told Global on Saturday that an outline of the presentation was submitted for approval with the school beforehand. She added the contents in the photo shared by Higgs were not intended to encourage those actions, but to discuss the dangers of unsafe sex, including questions that young people often have.“We want to help protect our children, and we are of the same common mindset that we are also preoccupied about where our children are getting their wrong (or) misguided information on the web,” she said.Norris called the move to ban the organization from presenting in New Brunswick schools “unfortunate.”The premier’s post on X says parents must be respected, similar language to what he has used when discussing his government’s controversial changes to provincial policies involving gender identity in schools. The new rules require students to get parental

China slammed in G-7 show of unity threatening trade escalation
China’s engagement in the global system of commerce was roundly criticized by Group of Seven finance chiefs in a show of unity accompanied by a threat of further escalation. The club of rich-world ministers and central bankers concluded its gathering in the Italian lakeside town of Stresa on Saturday with a communique that cited the world’s second-biggest economy by name and accused the country of hurting the economies of its trade partners. “While reaffirming our interest in a balanced and reciprocal collaboration, we express concerns about China’s comprehensive use of non-market policies and practices that undermines our workers, industries, and economic resilience,” they said. “We will continue to monitor the potential negative impacts of overcapacity and will consider taking steps to ensure a level playing field.”

Pet Gala is the dogs' time to shine. Designer Anthony Rubio threw the now-annual fashion fete Monday night, sending 18 dogs down the red carpet at New York's American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog. Each canine donned couture similar to what celebrities wore at the Met Gala just two weeks earlier. «I want people to understand that we're not making fun of the Met Gala. We're not mimicking the Met Gala,» Rubio said. «We're elevating and appraising and appreciating the wonderful designs that were presented at the Met Gala by the most talented designers of the world.»

Youth and Sports Affairs, Anurag Singh Thakur, on Sunday called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's rally in Una as a flop show, asserting that all of his guarantees are mere "lies". Referring to Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Rahul Gandhi as «Chote Miyan» and «Bade Miyan», respectively, Thakur claimed that not a single guarantee from Sukhu has been fulfilled in the state, and Rahul Gandhi left after making even more empty promises. Dollar firm ahead of global inflation data
dollar made a steady start to the week, as investors were focused on U.S., European and Japanese inflation data to guide the global interest rate outlook. Foreign exchange trade has been dominated by the hunt for «carry» in recent months, punishing low-rate currencies and supporting the dollar while U.S. data has blown hot and cold and dented policymakers' confidence on the rates outlook.

Severe cyclone 'Remal' leaves devastation in its wake as it makes landfall in coastal West Bengal
cyclonic storm 'Remal' made landfall between the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, bringing heavy rains that flooded homes and farmland, and leaving a trail of destruction. The landfall process began at 8:30 pm on Sunday over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country. 'Remal' flattened fragile dwellings, uprooted trees and knocked down electric poles. One person was injured after being hit by debris in the Gosaba area of the Sundarbans. More than one lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in West Bengal before the cyclone struck.

Fed's favourite underlying inflation gauge is seen cooling
Federal Reserve's first-line inflation gauge is about to show some modest relief from stubborn price pressures, corroborating central bankers' prudence about the timing of interest-rate cuts. Economists expect the personal consumption expenditures price index minus food and energy — due on Friday — to rise 0.2% in April. That would mark the smallest advance so far this year for the measure, which provides a better snapshot of underlying inflation.

Palestinian medics say Israeli airstrikes kill 35 in Gaza's Rafah as displaced people are hit
killed at least 35 people Sunday and hit tents for displaced people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, and «numerous» others were trapped in flaming debris. Gaza's Health Ministry said women and children made up most of the dead and dozens of wounded. The attacks came two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to end its military offensive in Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million population had sought shelter before Israel's incursion earlier this month. Tens of thousands of people remain in the area while many others have fled. Footage from the scene of the largest airstrike showed heavy destruction. Israel's army confirmed the strike and said it hit a Hamas installation and killed two senior Hamas militants. It said it was investigating reports that civilians were harmed. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was in Rafah on Sunday and was briefed on the «deepening of operations» there, his office said.

Mobile users can expect relief from 'spoof international calls'
department of telecommunications (DoT) and mobile operators devised a system that can identify and block spoof international calls showing up as Indian numbers. Through this, the government and telcos are seeking to give relief to mobile users who have been getting such calls from cyber criminals posing as police officials, courier company workers and even DoT and Trai officials. Hoax international calls originate outside the country, but cyber criminals manipulate the calling line identity (CLI) to make such calls appear as originating within India. The DoT has directed telecom carriers to block such calls.

Affordable homes supply down 38%
New supply of affordable homes — priced up to Rs60 lakh each — declined 38% across eight major cities to 33,420 units during January-March this year, with builders focusing on developing luxury flats, according to PropEquity. Real estate data analytic firm PropEquity attributed the fall in new supply to sharp rise in land and construction costs, which has made development of affordable housing projects less profitable or unviable. According to PropEquity data, the fresh supply of such homes was 33,420 units during January-March 2024 across top eight cities against 53,818 in the year-ago period.

Witnessing The Mind
thoughts are a constant stream, so much so that we don't need to seek freedom from external influences but from our mind. It's easy to comprehend tangible objects, but how can we grasp the workings of the mind, a mere illusion that governs our world and actions? Understanding the mind is not a quest for external knowledge, but a journey of self-discovery that takes us inward. It's a journey that, once completed, allows us to transcend the mind's influence. To truly comprehend your mind, you must embark on this journey, exploring the depths of your own consciousness. We are always engrossed in activities, but the essential nature of the mind is to be detached. The temperament of this mind is such that no matter how hard we try to bind it to this world, it refuses to be bound. It remains dispassionate.
