China's approach to water with lower riparian countries in South Asia threatens region: Report
The report in Bangladesh-based daily further highlighted that Chinese investments in water-based resources is leading to adverse impact on the environment, displacement of local people and huge debt to countries. The combination of territory grabbing and water resource hegemony by China is a threat that all countries in South and South East Asia face and their respective security environments Although, the planet is covered with 70 per cent water, but only 2.5 per cent of this is fresh water, which has led to many experts predicting the next theatre of war as the conflict over water. This is precisely why nations have begun to preserve fresh water and, in some cases, have gone beyond to become global water hegemons, as they grow and develop. One example in the list is China. Being a water-stressed country, Beijing made huge investments in water-based resources globally. However, apart from the geo-political implications, China's water hegemony has had an adverse impact on the environment, and well-being of local populations and pushed nations into debt traps due to resource-intensive investments in dam/hydroelectric projects. According to the Daily Asian Age report, China is said to have constructed a whopping 308 dams in 70 countries on various rivers (Tibet Policy Institute, September 23, 2016). The recent estimates of China's dam construction worldwide show that these dams generate a total of 81 GW of power.

Why industrial commodity prices are under pressure
Base metals prices retreated from their January highs as Chinese economic woes threatened the demand from the world’s largest commodity consumer. Fears of excess supplies and the US Fed’s rate hike policies also added pressure on prices throughout the period. In the benchmark LME platform, prices of the most used industrial commodities like copper and aluminium shed by more than 37% and 17%, respectively since their January highs.

Image of 'Singham' cop delivering instant justice sends out dangerous message: Bombay High Court judge
hero cop" delivering quick justice without bothering about the due process of law, as shown in blockbuster films like "Singham", sends out a very harmful message, Justice Gautam Patel of the Bombay High Court said on Friday. Speaking at a function organised by the Indian Police Foundation to mark its annual day and Police Reforms Day, he also questioned people's «impatience» with the process of law. Talking about police reforms, the judge said that the Supreme Court's judgement in the Prakash Singh case was an «opportunity missed», and also noted that the law enforcement machinery can not be reformed unless we reform ourselves. The image of police as «bullies, corrupt and unaccountable» is a populist one and the same can be said about anyone in the public life including judges, politicians and journalists, he said. When the public thinks that the courts are not doing their job, it celebrates when the police step in, the judge said. «This is why when a rape accused is killed in an encounter while allegedly trying to flee, people think it is not just alright but it is celebrated. Justice has been served, they feel, but has it?» he said. This view is deeply pervasive and reflected strongly in our popular culture, especially in Indian cinema, Justice Patel noted. «In movies, police rail against judges who are shown as docile, timid, thickly-spectacled and often very badly dressed.

A Komagata Maru apology, an NDP alliance: Why Justin Trudeau might not condemn Khalistan extremism
Justin Trudeau seeks to return to governance for a third straight term, his popularity seems to have taken a hit, giving way to Conservative Right wing opposition candidate Pierre Poilievre. PM Trudeau's handling of the killing of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar seems to indicate a subtle dissociation from a right-wing leader in order to propel his static year-over-year at 31 per cent popularity as best choice for Prime Minister candidate. The need to move away, rather severe ties with right wing ideologies seems like an opportune moment for an unfazed PM Trudeau.
