tornado in eastern China killed 10 people and seriously injured several others, state media said Wednesday, the latest in a string of extreme weather events to strike the country. «Yesterday afternoon, a strong tornado occurred in Suqian, Jiangsu Province… causing casualties and property loss in certain areas,» state broadcaster CCTV said. The tornado affected more than 5,500 people, with 137 houses collapsing, according to «preliminary statistics» cited in the report. More than 400 people have been temporarily relocated because of the twister, state media said. Video footage shared on social media by the state-run People's Daily showed high winds whipping debris around above residential buildings, as well as a street strewn with fallen signs and other objects. China saw record-breaking downpours and weeks of historic heat this summer, with scientists saying such extreme weather events are being exacerbated by climate change. Whole villages in Jiangsu were levelled and at least 98 people were killed in 2016 after the region was hit by a storm with hurricane-force winds and the worst tornado in half a century.

SJVN shares zoomed over 9% to hit a new 52-week high of Rs 83.7 in Wednesday's trade on BSE after the firm signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Power Finance Corporation (PFC) for financial assistance for projects. «PFC and the Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for financial assistance to various diversified portfolio of projects including majorly Renewable Energy projects and thermal generation project to be set up at total project cost of about Rs 1,18,826 crore,» the company said in an exchange filing. As per the MoU, the term loan financial assistance is proposed tentatively at 70% of the project cost, which may be increased for renewable energy projects as per project requirements. At 12.27 p.m., the scrip was trading 8.7% higher at Rs 83.2 on BSE. SJVN also delivered multibagger returns, as it has rallied over 170% in the last six months.

The issue closes on September 27, Wednesday. The price band for the IPO has been fixed at Rs 168-171 per equity share. The IPO comprises a total of 17,82,400 equity shares, including a fresh issue of 1,260,800 equity shares and an offer for sale (OFS) of 5,21,600 equity shares, the company said in its media release. The minimum bid lot for investors is set at 800 shares.

Noida news: A garlic vendor was stripped and assaulted in Noida by a commission agent and his aides, police has said as reported by news agency PTI. This came as the 35-year-old vendor was unable to pay a part of his ₹5,600 loan. Additional DCP (Central Noida) Rajiv Dixit said told PTI that two persons, including the 'aadhti' (commission agent), have been arrested and strictest action would be taken against them.

Investing.com — The U.S. dollar traded in a steady fashion in Europe Wednesday ahead of the conclusion of the latest Federal Reserve policy meeting, while sterling weakened after a surprise drop in the headline U.K. inflation rate.

Sterling was last unchanged on the day against the dollar at $1.2382, just above Monday's session trough of $1.2371, its weakest since early June, and flat against the euro at 86.36 pence. The BoE meets on Thursday and money markets show traders widely expect to see one final quarter-point hike to 5.50%, but no realistic prospect of a rate cut until next summer.Inflation has fallen to 6.8% from a 41-year peak of 11.1% last October, but it is still the highest among major economies and progress in bringing it down has been far slower. Consumer inflation in the United States has fallen to 3.7% from last June's 9.1% rate, while in the euro zone, inflation is running at 5.3%, almost half last October's 10.7% reading. UK growth, meanwhile, is slowing more than most economists expected, after strikes in hospitals and schools and unusually wet weather weighed on output in July. Against that backdrop, a Reuters poll of economists last week showed a significant minority believe the BoE has room to raise rates at least once more this year after September. However, expectations for the BoE have softened in the past few weeks. Back in June, money markets showed traders believed UK rates could hit 6% by the middle of 2024, as the central bank was forced to keep tightening monetary policy to tackle inflation. «With the BoE market pricing now more reasonable, and sterling positioning still long, we think it will be harder for GBP to stage fresh rallies in the near term.

BL Kashyap rallied over 6% to Rs 57 in Wednesday's trade on BSE after the company secured a new order aggregating to approximately Rs 167 crore, from the Delhi International Airport. The order is for the construction of structural works and other finishing works and is to be executed in 18 months. The company's total order book, as of now, stands at Rs 3,005 crore, excluding GST. Earlier in July, the firm had secured a Rs 369 crore order from DLF Home Developers. In June, it also secured an order aggregating Rs 147 crore from Nzuri Pune Knowledge Park Private Limited. At 11.02 a.m., the scrip was trading 1% higher at Rs 55.
