Record 102,611 companies, LLPs incorporated till August
Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). About 2.44 million company forms were filed on the latest version of the ministry's corporate filing portal until September 10 in this financial year, against 2.29 million a year before, the data showed. Around 306,000 LLP forms were filed on the MCA21 (Version 3 or V3) portal until September 10, up from about 233,000 a year ago. Higher incorporation comes even as some company secretaries and chartered accountants continue to flag technical glitches involving the V3 portal since its rollout for companies on January 23. Amid the outcry over the glitches, the MCA had on July 12 allowed professionals such as CAs, company secretaries and cost accountants to merge into one or deactivate multiple user IDs.

Artificial Intelligence both a risk and opportunity for Journalism: report
Artificial intelligence (AI) is both a threat and an opportunity for journalism, with more than half of those surveyed for a new report saying they had concerns about its ethical implications on their work. While 85% of respondents had experimented with generative AI such as ChatGPT or Google Bard for tasks including writing summaries and generating headlines, 60% said they also had reservations. The study, carried out by the London School of Economic's JournalismAI initiative, surveyed over 100 news organisations from 46 countries about their use of AI and associated technologies between April and July. «More than 60% of respondents noted their concern about the ethical implications of AI on journalistic values including accuracy, fairness and transparency and other aspects of journalism,» the researchers said in a statement. «Journalism around the world is going through another period of exciting and scary technological change,» added report co-author and project director Charlie Beckett. He said the study showed that the new generative AI tools were both a «potential threat to the integrity of information and the news media» but also an «incredible opportunity to make journalism more efficient, effective and trustworthy». Journalists recognised the time-saving benefits of AI with tasks such as interview transcription. But they also noted the need for AI generated content to be checked by a human «to mitigate potential harms like bias and inaccuracy», the authors said. Challenges surrounding AI integration were «more pronounced for newsrooms in the global south» they added. «AI technologies developed have been predominantly available in English, but not in many Asian languages.

Saudi cuts Asian Premium after India taps Russian oil
NEW DELHI : Saudi Arabia, the world’s second largest oil producer, has slashed the premium charged on exports to India while many others have discontinued it altogether, a person aware of the matter said, after India began sourcing the bulk of its energy requirements from Russia. Asian premium is an extra amount levied by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) from Asian countries above the actual selling price. India has repeatedly pressed oil producers to eliminate this premium and even asked for an ‘Asian discount’ instead.

Fed Holds Rates Steady but Pencils in One More Hike This Year
WASHINGTON—Federal Reserve officials voted to hold interest rates steady at a 22-year high but signaled they were prepared to raise rates once more this year to combat inflation. With economic activity stronger than anticipated, a majority of officials also expected they would need to maintain interest rates near their current level through next year, according to projections released Wednesday at the conclusion of their two-day policy meeting. Fed officials raised their benchmark federal-funds rate at their previous meeting in July to a range between 5.25% and 5.5%.

FAME II may need more fuel as EV sales rev up, heavy industries ministry seeks additional Rs 1,700 cr
electric vehicle sales, funds earmarked for the second phase are likely to be exhausted before March 2024. The heavy industries ministry was allotted ₹5,127 crore for the current fiscal year — the highest allocation since the ₹10,000-crore scheme was launched in 2019. «We are seeing a great demand for EVs. In all probability, we may run out of funds. Seeking additional funds under FAME II is under consideration,» said a senior official. The ministry wants to ensure there are sufficient funds for the scheme to run its full course. The official did not specify the amount the heavy industries ministry is seeking, though another official privy to the discussions said it could be ₹1,500-1,700 crore. Registration of EVs across the segment has been advancing at a brisk pace month-on-month.

Justin Trudeau's remarks attempt to shift focus from China links
Justin Trudeau's allegations against India's «role» in killing of a Sikh terrorist on Canadian soil could be a diversionary tactic to save his political skin with the ruling Liberal Party facing a probe for its links with China. Trudeau is facing heat in the case and he may have been motivated to label unsubstantiated allegations against India as a diversionary tactic, according to observers of Canadian politics. «The allegation on the floor of Parliament is a diversionary plot on the Canadian PM's part to distract attention from the public inquiry of election interference in Canada that has just started and which will inevitably show the Liberal Party's deep ties to Beijing and Trudeau's own implication therein. He has essentially chosen to throw the India relationship under the bus to save his political skin,» quipped a source who did not want to be named. Trudeau's government has faced growing criticism over the past several months after media reports surfaced alleging that China sought to interfere in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections. Also read: Hate crimes, violence in Canada, says India's travel advisory Earlier this year, a Canadian lawmaker stepped down from Trudeau's Liberal Party after a media report raised questions about his dealings with China.

Federal Reserve keeps interest rate steady, says inflation remains elevated
Federal Open Market Committee kept its interest rates steady in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%, a 22-year high, after the end of its two-day meeting. Majority of economists polled by Bloomberg had expected the Federal Reserve to pause its interest-rate hikes, though a recent spike in oil prices has raised concerns another hike may lie ahead. From March 2022 through May 2023 the Fed raised rates at 10 successive meetings — by anywhere from a quarter to three quarters of a point — as it fought the worst rise of inflation since the early 1980s.
