US lawsuit against TikTok to focus on childrens' privacy
U.S. Department of Justice plans to focus an upcoming lawsuit against TikTok on allegations that the popular social media platform violated the privacy rights of children, rather than claims it misled adult users about its data privacy practices, according to a source familiar with the matter. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission investigated the potential violations by TikTok and its parent company ByteDance and referred the case to the Justice Department on Tuesday.

Congress’ Praveen Chakravarty backtracks over criticism of Karnataka government hiring BCG, issues apology for “private opinion”
Praveen Chakravarty on Friday apologised for his post on social media platform X, criticising Karnataka Congress government's decision to hire the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to help with suggestions to boost state revenue. Chakravarty, chairman of Professionals' Congress & Data Analytics, had faced backlash from his party after his dig at the government was echoed by the opposition BJP. Posting a retraction on X, Chakravarty said his comments reflected his private opinion, and weren’t intended to be a criticism of the Karnataka government. “I posted my private opinion on the broader culture of outsourcing core political & policy functions to outside consultants with no ‘skin in the game.’ It’s an issue that is debated widely in research circles & my comment was purely academic…I have spoken with & expressed my apologies for causing inadvertent harm to the leadership in Karnataka,” he wrote. The Siddaramaiah-regime roped in the BCG earlier this week, under pressure to find funding to fulfil its guarantee programmes, which will cost the state around Rs 52,000 crore this fiscal year. The government has already hiked taxes on fuel, liquor, and property, and is said to be considering further rate revisions to mobilise revenue. The guarantee programmes themselves have come under fire after the party managed to win just nine out of 28 seats in the state in the recent general elections.

Cockroach found in food served in Vande Bharat train. IRCTC apologises
Vande Bharat train is in the news again, but this time for the wrong reasons. According to reports, a couple traveling on the Vande Bharat train found a cockroach in their meal on June 18. The nephew of the couple, who were traveling from Bhopal to Agra, shared pictures of the dal in which the bug was found on social media. Following this, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) took action and imposed a fine on the service provider. The issue was raised by a user named Vidit Varshney on social media. He complained about the poor quality of food served to his uncle and aunt on the train. «On 18-06-24, my Uncle and Aunt were traveling from Bhopal to Agra in Vande Bharat. Arvind Kejriwal gets bail; 'Satyamev Jayate', says AAP's Atishi
Delhi Court on Thursday granted bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi Excise policy case. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March this year under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged role in the Delhi excise policy case. The federal agency had last month filed a chargesheet against Kejriwal accusing him of being the «kingpin» in the case. The ED has also chargesheeted the AAP as a co-accused in the case. Vacation Judge Niyay Bindu passed the order today after hearing contentions of ED and Kejriwal over two days. After the pronouncement of the order this evening, the ED requested whether the signing of the bail bond could be deferred by 48 hours so that the order may be challenged before the appellate court. However, the judge turned down ED's request. The bail bond is to be produced before the duty judge tomorrow, the court added. The agency has alleged that Kejriwal demanded ₹100 crore in kickbacks to benefit certain liquor wholesalers in the excise policy. It further alleged that the AAP utilised the bribes in the 2022 Goa assembly elections.
