Donald Trump's Truth Social applied for H-1B visa he once called ‘very bad’ for the US — a case of politics vs business?
Donald Trump applied for a business visa program that he sought to restrict during his administration and which many of his allies want him to curtail in a potential second term. Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, filed an application in June 2022 for an H-1B visa for a worker at a $65,000 annual salary, the lowest wage category allowed under the program. Federal immigration data shows the company was approved for a visa a few months later.

BJP files complaint against Congress for 'assassinating' Kangana Ranaut's character
Himachal Pradesh BJP Sunday filed a complaint against the Congress and the Hamirpur Youth Congress Club for allegedly portraying actor and BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, in a negative light by using pictures from her films. The BJP urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to initiate appropriate legal action against them for using objectionable, scandalous and offensive language on social media. In its complaint to the ECI, with copy to the Himachal chief electoral officer, the BJP alleged that the Congress has directed its various wings to assassinate the character of Kangana on social media. The Hamirpur Youth Congress Club has used a picture of Kangana from her «artistic pursuits» to portray her as a negative character and posted «derogatory double meaning remarks». The complaint filed by BJP state media in-charge Karan Nanda cited the repeated instances of alleged «serious violations» of the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860; Representation of People Act (RPA), 1951; and the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by the Congress leaders.

High demand, dip in production push millet prices up 17%
high demand, government push, social media trends and a marginal decline in production has driven up millet prices. Data released last week showed that inflation in ragi and ragi products accelerated in March to 16.6% — the second highest in over six years. The highest was 16.7% in February. «For millet, output has been flattish but higher demand due to several food industries using them has pushed up prices,» said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, Bank of Baroda. Despite the government's push, the area under ragi decreased to 1.04 million hectares in 2023-24 from 1.16 million hectares in 2022-23. According to government data, this led to a decline in production to about 1.39 million tonnes in 2023-24 from 1.69 million tonnes in 2022-23. Ragi inflation has been accelerating in double digits for the past seven months and pace picked up further since January. Jowar is no exception, either. Although inflation levels eased to 10% in March compared with 12.7% the previous month, the commodity has experienced double-digit inflation since December 2022.

Myth debunking 101: Job designation determines your worth
job title determines your worth. Sure, in a corporate setup where a hierarchy is followed, titles define the amount of authority one has. But in no way does this dictate your potential. The real problem begins when an individual hunting for jobs or looking to switch careers runs after titles without weighing their contribution to the element of personal growth. Hence, it’s imperative to debunk this myth. Let us begin by understanding why often individuals attach their self-worth to their titles.

Modi's speeches project him as PM of BJP, not country: Sharad Pawar
Narendra Modi's speeches suggest he is «BJP's PM» and not India, claimed NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday. PM Modi should tell the people what he and his party will do for the country instead of attacking the opposition, said the 83-year-old NCP founder at a campaign rally in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Pawar was here to canvass for opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidates Chandrakant Khaire, who is contesting from the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency on a Sena (UBT) ticket, and Congress' Kalyan Kale from Jalna. The central Maharashtra constituencies, located in the state's Marathwada region, will go to polls in the fourth phase on May 13.

View: So, how effective is naam ke vaste change, really?
Sato? According to a recent study, by 2531, everyone in Japan will have 'Sato' as their surname. The reason is that because of a civil law adopted in the late 19th century, married couples must share the last name. Conducted by Hiroshi Yoshida, a professor of economics, the study has projected that in 500 years, everyone in Japan will be called Sato-san, 'san' being the Nippon honorific equivalent to the Hindi 'ji'. 'If everyone becomes Sato, we may have to be addressed by our first names, or by numbers. I don't think that would be a good world to live in,' said Yoshida-san. Currently, Sato is the most common Japanese surname, equivalent of the Anglo-Saxon 'Smith', and according to a 2023 finding accounts for 1.5% of the total population, followed by Suzuki. As the latest study was published on April 1, it was taken to be an April Fool's prank on social media. But Yoshida-san doesn't consider the Sato-isation of Japan a joke. 'A nation of Satos will not only be inconvenient, but also undermine human dignity.'

'How long are you planning to stay?'- 'another papad?'
Time and tide wait for no man. But boy, is there a tide in the affairs of some men who wait to know every aspect of your time. 'How long are you planning to stay?' has to be in the same league of pointless questions as 'How does the defendant plead?' and 'Bhaiyya, these veggies are fresh, right?' It has the additional virtue of being downright rude. There is a certain candour, even chutzpah, when someone — usually an elderly relative, or a friend of the same age-group — asks things like 'How much is your 'take home'?' or 'What rent do you pay for this place?' I have fobbed off these Buland Darwaza-prying inquiries from non-Enforcement Directorate folks by either shrugging and ho-humming back with 'Oh, it's okay', or 'Some more papad, uncle?' But when faced with those persistent questions about one's itinerary and schedule, the ripostes trip less thick and fast off one's tongue. 'Spacetime' questions outside astrophysics are fundamentally conversation fillers, literally time-pass queries, like talking about the weather (unless you were in Dubai, or went out to vote last week). It also uses time — or, more accurately, temporality — as a crutch to hobble along a tete-a-tete that, unbeknown to the intrusive questioner, is as offensive as the Viet Cong's Tet one. As far as social etiquette goes, 'How long will you be there?' is on a par with asking a lady not just her age, but how long it is till she hits menopause.
