Bangladesh Nationalist Party's frustration grows as interim government delays polls
BNP) that played a key role in overthrowing PM Sheikh Hasina is now frustrated over the delay by the Md Yunus-led interim government in organising elections and has taken potshots at the student leaders and advisers to the regime. The party feels the interim regime has hijacked the political process in Bangladesh and denied the party a chance to return to power. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir this week indirectly chided the students by mentioning that student leaders alone were not powerful enough to bring down the government. He also pulled up one of the advisers to the government for his comments on political parties in Bangladesh and demanded that such a statement be withdrawn.

As Xi Jinping snubs Trump's Inauguration Day invitation; here are world leaders who may line up to attend the ceremony on January 20
Xi Jinping has reportedly declined Donald Trump's invitation to attend the upcoming presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. No explanation has been provided by Chinese officials regarding Xi Jinping's decision not to attend the inauguration. This decision comes as a significant blow to Trump's plans for a spectacular swearing-in event on January 20th, which he had hoped would turn into a global spectacle. According to State Department records, this would have marked the first time a foreign head of state has ever attended a U.S. presidential inauguration.

Consumer goods firms step up capex to drive sustainable growth
capital expenditure, including on research and development (R&D), to make their products as well as manufacturing processes sustainable and environment friendly, as these factors are becoming crucial for both consumers and investors. Companies increased their capex up to nine times in the past three financial years, and on R&D by up to four times, to specifically make products and manufacturing processes sustainable, according to an ET study of 15 leading publicly traded companies across fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automobile and electronics sectors. For a few companies, expenditure went up on both counts. «Consumers nowadays, especially the younger generation, are extremely conscious about sustainability and prefer to buy brands who develop sustainable products and use sustainable manufacturing processes,» said Pradeep Bakshi, managing director of Tata-owned appliance manufacturer Voltas. «Even for business-to-business deals, this has become a benchmark.»

Scared of tennis? Too busy for golf? Pick pickleball!
Corporate India has a new obsession: pickleball. What is it? Here's what I think it is. Several middle-aged men and women, too afraid of tennis, too busy for golf, decide they want to hit something that gives the illusion of running around without having to do so. It's the best answer to a 40-something's existential crisis, diverting thoughts of violence, divorce, and forcing an IB school on your second-born — probably named Amaiyrraah, with a silent h — onto your Bangalore housing society's newly constructed court, which was previously a 'Designated EV Charging Area to Come'. We won't delve into the armtwisting in the society group, where die-hard players posted YouTube videos showcasing how the sport was conquering America, thereby succeeding in the impossible: silencing the society chairman uncle who couldn't comprehend the passion, this 'non-sport' sport, and, by default, this India. The game is designed so cleverly that it is beyond embarrassment. Just the right amount of hip movement without needing an orthopaedic on standby. Across the boundary from childishness, but not quite, as an athlete would define it, sport.

Crouching Tiger, Wounded Dragon: India is in a commanding position on the world chess scene, and it’s only the beginning
This was the tableau that transfixed fans over three weeks in the just concluded world chess championship match between Ding Liren and Dommaraju Gukesh. Liren wears a white shirt and nervously covers his mouth with his hand. Gukesh, dressed nattily in a powderblue suit, sports the results of a teenager’s first, brash attempt at growing a beard. He closes his eyes and leans back as if for a power nap, but in reality, a contemplation of the position in the movie theatre of the mind’s eye.

This non-stereotypical portrayal of two flawed women is one of 2024's best films
Shuchi Talati's Girls Will Be Girls shook me up. When I got to an unnerving scene of extreme intimidation in Talati's debut feature, I was suddenly not a journalist watching an award-winning film, but a woman who had once been a teenaged girl, minding my own business, walking up a deserted flight of stairs in an unfamiliar school where I was attending an inter-school contest, when two older boys materialised from the opposite direction, crowded me towards the banister, casually groped me, and walked away with grins on their faces without pausing for a moment, as though it was all in a day's work for them. It was neither the first nor the last time I was molested. And I cannot quite tell why this particular scene in this particular film brought up that particular memory. I guess it was because here, too, there was a teenaged girl, there was a school, and there were boys who got away with it.

When your daughter declares you unfit for public viewing: A father's fashion crisis
When your mother, sister, wife, or concubine remonstrates against your slovenliness, you barely take notice. But when your only child — who, just a year ago, thought you were as glamorous as Suga of BTS fame — passes a fatwa on your attending the annual parent-teacher mash-up, you evaluate your sartorial style. As a consolation, I remembered that I had asked the same of my father 40 years ago. In my father's case, it was the opposite. I was afraid he would get his bow tie out once more, like Karan Thapar. I have held the firm belief that sartorially I could carry anything off. Here, my idol was Saul Bellow, who was said to be always dressed like a tout at the racetracks while giving lectures. My style has been basic, based on comfort and frugality. As a younger son, I wore cast-offs from my father and brother. I certainly knew what Eliot meant when he wrote in The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock: 'I will wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.'

How India's toy industry beat China with high tariffs and quality checks – can it go further?
Priced at half that of their imported counterparts, the Indian toy doesn’t just match but “rivals the foreign brands feature-for-feature”, exclaim the Shettys. The kids, who got to add to their treasure trove of mostly imported dart blasters, are happy too. That is the sweet spot that India’s reviving toy industry has captured, and in a rather quick time too. In just four years, India has cut toy imports from China, a nation that has long dominated the global market, by an impressive 80%. A mix of high tariffs and stringent quality checks helped. Between FY20 and FY24, India sharply increased customs duty — from 20% to 70%. It also enforced the Quality Control Order (QCO), a regulation mandating stringent safety standards for all toys, whether domestically produced or imported. Result: In FY20, India had imported Chinese toys worth $235 million, a figure that plunged to just $41 million by FY24. It has also evolved into a net exporter of toys.

Did the world's richest man lie? Sam Altman and Elon Musk' feud takes an ugly turn, OpenAI publishes Tesla CEO's old emails showing he favored a for-profit structure
OpenAI has escalated its legal feud with co-founder Elon Musk by pretty recently publishing his old emails, which actually reveals that he previously advocated for the company to adopt a for-profit structure, reported Business Insider. According to Business Insider, in a recent blog post and legal filing, OpenAI highlighted an email from the year 2015 in which Elon Musk eventually expressed concerns that the nonprofit model was ‘not optimal’. Adding onto that, the company also noted that Elon Musk had supported a transition to for-profit in the year 2017 while contradicting his current opposition to such a move. Elon Musk has filed innumerable lawsuits against OpenAI while seeking to halt its transition to a for-profit entity and at the same time alleging that the organization has strayed from its original mission of serving public interest, asserted Business Insider. He also claims that the partnership of OpenAI with Microsoft creates a severely unfair competitive advantage for his own AI venture named xAI.

Russia pulling back but not out of Syria, sources say
Bashar al-Assad, four Syrian officials told Reuters. The ousting of Assad, who along with his late father, former President Hafez al-Assad, had forged a close alliance with Moscow, has thrown the future of Russia's bases — the Hmeimim airbase in Latakia and the Tartous naval facility — into question. Satellite footage from Friday shows what appeared to be at least two Antonov AN-124s, among the world's largest cargo planes, at the Hmeimim base with their nose cones open, apparently preparing to load up.
