RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata ended their hunger strike after a two-hour-long meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna on Monday night. «Today at the meeting with the Chief Minister, we got the opportunity to discuss many things and she also spoke to us about many things. We have got assurance of some directives, which she said we would get by 3 pm p.m. tomorrow,» SayantGhosh Hazra, a junior doctor, told ANI after the meeting. Seventeen junior doctors participated in the meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The meeting was telecast live from the secretariat.

Jhumpa Lahiri has declined to accept an award from the Noguchi Museum in Queens in protest after it fired three employees who had worn kaffiyehs in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. «Jhumpa Lahiri has chosen to withdraw her acceptance of the 2024 Isamu Noguchi Award in response to our updated dress code policy,» the museum said in a statement on Wednesday. «We respect her perspective and understand that this policy may or may not align with everyone's views,» The New York Times cited the statement as saying of Lahiri. «We remain committed to our core mission of advancing the understanding and appreciation of Isamu Noguchi's art and legacy while upholding our values of inclusivity and openness.»

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a telephonic conversation with his Lebanon counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib on Tuesday. During the phone-call, he blamed Israel for a series of pager explosions in Lebanon, labelling it "Israeli terrorism." Araghchi asked about the condition of Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, who was injured in the explosions, and thanked Lebanon for his treatment, CNN reported, citing Press TV. He offered solidarity with victims and expressed willingness to provide aid to victims. In a post to X, Abbas Araghchi stated, «In call with my Lebanese counterpart, strongly condemned Israeli terrorism. Expressed solidarity with victims--including a 10-year-old--and readiness to provide any aid. Ministry of External Affairs issued a strong condemnation of Khamenei's comments, which had criticized the treatment of minorities in India. “We strongly deplore the comments made regarding minorities in India by the Supreme Leader of Iran. These are misinformed and unacceptable. Countries commenting on minorities are advised to look at their own record before making any observations about others,” the ministry stated.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat took up the farmers' cause by joining protesters at the Shambhu border (located between Punjab and Haryana) on August 31, demanding that the central government address their demands. The farmers, marking 200 days of the 'Delhi Chalo' agitation, have been seeking a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) among other demands. Phogat, who faced disqualification in the recent 50-kg final match at the Paris Olympic Games, was felicitated by the farmers. She expressed her solidarity with their cause. Farmers under the banners of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha organized a 'kisan mahapanchayat' to commemorate 200 days of their protest. They have been demonstrating at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, following a blockade by security forces.

Dhaka University in Bangladesh held a protest in solidarity with ongoing demonstrations over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata in the neighbouring country. The protest, organised under the banner «Awaaz Tolo Nari» (Raise Your Voice, Women), on Friday, took place at the Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University, Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. «We are aware of the non-cooperative attitude of the medical college administration regarding the rape case in Upper Bengal. As women, we demand that the administration provide maximum legal assistance, strictly enforce the law, and announce the verdict promptly,» Dhaka Tribune quoted Rahnuma Ahmed Niret, a student from the Department of Physics, as saying at the event. Anya Fahmin, a student of the Department of Anthropology, added: «Women worldwide face rape, and we fully support the ongoing movement for fair accountability in the RG Kar Hospital case in Kolkata. Additionally, we call for a public trial of the rape and murder case of Sohagi Jahan Tonu in Comilla. The general public has a right to know, especially when the army is involved. The government must ensure a safe country for women through the mass uprising of student communities.»

Resident doctors at government hospitals in some states, including West Bengal and Delhi, continued their strike as various doctors' bodies differed over calling off the strike. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) on Tuesday night called off its strike after meeting Union Health Minister J P Nadda. However, the medics at the central government-run AIIMS-Delhi, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), and other Resident Doctors' Associations said that their stir would continue until a central law to curb attacks on medical personnel is implemented and a concrete solution found. In West Bengal, long queues were seen at outpatient department (OPD) ticket counters in government hospitals, where senior doctors joined their junior colleagues in the protest.
