India's lawyers, activists protest against new criminal laws
Indian lawyers and activists are urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to put on hold three sets of new criminal laws, arguing they will increase litigation in an already overburdened justice system and give excessive powers to police. India this month replaced its criminal justice system — the Indian Penal Code of 1860, the 1973 Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 — with new laws. The new laws, in force since July 1, expand police powers on pre-trial detention of an accused and introduce the death penalty for gang-rape of women aged under 18, among other provisions. They also mandate judges to issue written rulings within 45 days after a trial ends and for charges to be framed within 60 days of the first court hearing in a case.

Zimbabwe will look to exploit the home conditions against India: Spinner Masakadza
T20I in Harare, Zimbabwe spinner Wellington Masakadza said the tourists should take the home side lightly at their own risk, and added that they will exploit the home conditions to the maximum to win the five-match series. A new-look India team suffered a 13-run loss to an inexperienced yet spirited Zimbabwe side in an upset of massive proportion. India, who were recently crowned champions in the T20 World Cup albeit with a different set of players, were expected to blow away the Zimbabwean challenge when they restricted the home side to 115 for nine. But Zimbabwe wrote their own script, reducing India to 28 for four in the Powerplay and then eventually bowling them out for 102 in 19.5 overs.

Champai Soren: JMM leader whose entry and exit as CM both dramatic
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren's appointment as the state chief minister in February to replace Hemant Soren was as dramatic as his exit from the post five months later. Champai Soren, who once tilled fields with his father in a remote village in Jharkhand's Saraikela-Kharsawan district, took oath as the chief minister on February 2, days after his predecessor Hemant Soren resigned, just before he was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case. Hemant was released from jail on June 28 after the high court granted him bail, and on Wednesday, he was elected the party's legislature party leader. Champai submitted his resignation letter to the governor as chief minister to pave the way for Hemant Soren, who was sworn in as the chief minister for the third time. Sixty-seven-year-old tribal leader Champai Soren has earned the sobriquet 'Jharkhand's Tiger' for his contribution to the long fight for the creation of a separate state in the 1990s. Jharkhand was created from the southern part of Bihar in 2000.

Is this Kamala Harris’s moment?
WASHINGTON—As President Biden continues to grapple with the fallout from his bad debate against former President Donald Trump, more Democrats are publicly and privately suggesting Vice President Kamala Harris is the only viable replacement if Biden were to bow out of the race. The president has insisted he will not step aside, arguing he is best positioned to defeat Trump in November. But Democrats are nonetheless weighing the possibilities ahead, including the prospect that the party might find itself scrambling to nominate a successor if Biden, 81, is unable to overcome the increased skepticism from donors, party strategists and some Democratic lawmakers over his political future.

Kumar Birla re-enters race to buy Orient Cement to consolidate Ultratech's Southern push
UltraTech is in advanced negotiations with the promoter of Orient Cement Ltd (OCL), his uncle CK Birla, after restarting talks in recent weeks, amid intensifying consolidation efforts in the sector, said people familiar with the discussions. Kumar Birla's renewed efforts to buy Orient are seen as an attempt to trump Adani Cement and consolidate UltraTech’s position in the southern and western markets, especially Maharashtra and Telangana, after buying a 23% stake in India Cements at the end of last month. Adani Cement, which controls India's second largest cement capacity, has been engaged in talks with CK Birla since late last year but is said to have baulked at the valuation sought.
