India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that various states of the Southern part of India, as well as the Northern states, will observe heavy rainfall in Southern till May 23. In an official release, IMD said, “Isolated extremely heavy rainfall also very likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala till May 24." BJP, Ajaz Sheikh, who was killed in his native village of Herpora in Shopian of southern Kashmir late Saturday evening. Around the same time on Saturday, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a tourist couple from Rajasthan in Yanier area near the famous tourist spot of Pahalgam. Both of them are stated to be stable. Locals claim that four attackers had come to Sheik's house and two of them barged inside and opened fire at Sheikh who has been a vocal advocate of BJP's policies in Kashmir. Political parties, across the spectrum, condemned the attack but questioned the timing of such attacks as Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency is going for polls on May 25.

Weather updates: Heatwave grips northern India, IMD predicts rainfall in Kerala According to the IMD, North India, including several parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi will suffer from severe heatwave till May 21. FMCG demand most in five southern states: Discretionary or essential, sales go north in south
south appears to be at the vanguard of a broader demand recovery in post-Covid India, with the five states that lead in several socio-economic metrics registering healthier sales of both discretionary and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in comparison with the rest of the country. Global consumer research firm Kantar's latest report showed consumers in the south spent the highest on FMCG products, with an additional ₹2,261 spent per person on an average in 2023, compared with 2022. It also said the total number of shopping trips nearly doubled in 2023 from the previous year, with an exponential 185% growth in FMCG pack purchases. The data is for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

Sarpanch killed, tourist couple injured in twin attacks in southern Kashmir
former Sarpanch was shot dead and a non local couple was injured in Anantnag and Shopian districts of southern Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir police informed that unidentified gunmen fired at former sarpanch Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh in Herpora area of Shopian, who later succumbed to injuries. Sheikh was a member of the BJP and remained a vocal supporter of the party in and outside Kashmir Valley. Soon after the attack, armed forces cordoned the whole area and search operation was started to track the attackers. In another attack in Yanier area near the famous tourist spot of Pahalgam a non local tourist couple was injured when unidentified gunmen attacked their tenement on the banks of river lidder. The injured were identified as Farah Khan and her spouse Tabrez of Jaipur in Rajasthan. The couple was shifted to hospital where their condition is stated to be stable. Pahalgam is the main route for 52 day long Amarnath Yatra which is starting from June 29.

Cement maker Dalmia Bharat Ltd has commenced production at its new mill in Ariyalur manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, according to a regulatory filing by the company. With the commencement of commercial production of this 1 MTPA cement unit, the total cement manufacturing capacity of the company stands at 45.6 MTPA, it said. «With an investment of Rs 204 crore, this strategic brownfield expansion is aimed at strengthening its market presence in the South and meeting the growing demand for cement in the region,» the company said in a statement. This is in line with the company's long-term growth strategy aimed at increasing its total installed capacity to 110 -130 MT by 2031, it said.

KYIV: A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Crimea early Friday has left the city of Sevastopol without power and set a refinery ablaze in southern Russia, Russian authorities said. The drone raids marked Kyiv's attempt to strike back during Moscow's offensive in northeastern Ukraine, which has added to the pressure on outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian forces who are waiting for delayed deliveries of crucial weapons and ammunition from Western partners.
