Northern Lights’ or what is termed as Aurora Borealis in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Lights’ also called as Aurora Australis in the Southern Hemisphere. As the Sun heads towards the Solar Maximum, a greater number of such events are expected to be witnessed in the coming years. This has been reported by the USA Today. The Aurora which occurred in the previous week was witnessed in all 50 states of the US, some parts Europe, Australia and even Ladakh in India. This is expected to continue till 2026.
In this regard it is pertinent to understand some basic concepts.
A typical solar cycle lasts for 11 years. It tracks the activity in our Sun. Experts normally track the number of sun spots but also this coincides with solar flares, coronal mass ejections and radio emissions.

Sun spots emerge in the areas of the sun with a stronger magnetic field and during a sun cycle, many such sun spots emerge. It is these sunspots that produce the solar flares and the coronal ejections which interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. When this happens, the Aurora can be witnessed in the higher altitude regions of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
It is difficult to predict the next Aurora and experts continue to track the solar cycle and all its associated events. This solar cycle is known as #25. The length of the solar cycle is 11 years and they have been tracked since the colonial
