Pentagon has given out the details of a Russian counter space weapon that was launched earlier into the Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This weapon is said to be capable enough of attacking US Space assets. The US said that this launch took place on May 16, 2024.
The US Space Command said that the Russian Satellite Cosmos 2576 was launched on May 16, 2024, from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, which is located 497 miles north of Moscow.

Roscosmos, the state-owned Russian space agency issued a statement in which it said that the satellite was launched in the interest of the Defense Ministry and this launch was carried out using the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle. The launch date was given as May 17, 2024. This is due to the time difference between the two countries.
The re-entry of the Russian launch vehicle was recorded off the coast of Baja California in Mexico.
Speaking at a meeting organized by the UN Security Council, US Ambassador Robert Wood called this launch as “troubling” and highlighted its positioning in an orbit with several US Government satellites. In recent times, the US has been concerned about the growing weaponization of space by Russia which could lead to massive losses of several commercial and government satellites launched by US-based entities.
