US beefs up Mideast military assets as Israel pounds Gaza, foes in Lebanon, Syria
war mushrooming into a wider Middle East conflict rose on Sunday with the U.S. sending more military assets to the region as Israel pummelled Gaza anew and deadly clashes along its border with Lebanon intensified. Gaza's Health Ministry said 266 Palestinians, including 117 children, had been killed by Israeli air strikes in the past 24 hours in the enclave, to which Israel laid «total siege» after a deadly mass infiltration into Israel by Hamas gunmen on Oct. 7. In neighbouring Syria — where Hamas's main regional backer Iran has a military presence — Israeli missiles hit Damascus and Aleppo international airports early on Sunday, putting both out of service and killing two workers, Syrian state media said. Along Israel's northern border with Lebanon, the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has clashed with Israeli forces in support of Hamas in the deadliest escalation of frontier violence since an Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006. Hezbollah said four fighters were killed in heavy exchanges of fire on Sunday and another died of wounds sustained earlier, raising to 24 the number of its members killed since Oct. 7.

Mumbai civic body directs infra, realty projects to follow pollution control measures
Mumbai has directed real estate developers and contractors of infrastructure-related works to follow pollution control measures in the backdrop of a deterioration in air quality in the country’s commercial capital over the last few days. Construction, including private and infrastructure work led by the government, is currently underway at 6,000 locations and sites in Mumbai. While the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will issue detailed guidelines in the next few days, municipal commissioner and administrator Iqbal Singh Chahal has stated that projects being undertaken by both private as well as government bodies will be stopped if these measures are not followed. Following directions from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) that expressed concern over air quality index of Mumbai, Chahal interacted with state government agencies including MMRDA, MMRCL, MHADA and SRA, real estate developers’ bodies Credai and Naredco, and architects’ body PEATA on Friday. “Hardly 10 to 15 days have passed since the end of the monsoon…it is being observed that the air quality is adversely affected in the Mumbai region and also in the Mumbai metropolis,” Chahal said. The central and state governments have taken note of it and have instructed the local body to implement immediate measures, he added. “Dust is a major factor behind the increase in air pollution,” Chahal said, adding that there is a need to take measures to prevent and control dust and other factors that cause pollution. All the government agencies in Mumbai need to coordinate with each other and take urgent and mandatory measures, he said. Apart from construction, Chahal has also instructed that efforts should be made by projects related to electricity,

ICC World Cup: India restrict New Zealand to 273/10 in Dharamshala
Daryl Mitchell's highest score 130 (127) in ODIs and his 159 off 152 runs partnership with Rachin Ravindra 75 (87), New Zealand managed to score 273/10 in their fifty overs against India in Dharamshala on Sunday. At one stage, the Kiwis were looking in a fine position to easily score more than 300, but Mohammed Shami got 5/54 and showed his true class today as he bowled superbly in the final overs for his fifer and New Zealand lost all their wickets at 273. Earlier, Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first in the fifth consecutive match in which India would chase. India fielded poorly after making a fine start to the match, and a couple of chances went begging as Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah dropped easy catches.

Madhya Pradesh: Prahlad Patel condemns protest of BJP workers over ticket distribution
Prahlad Patel on Saturday condemned the protest staged by the supporters and workers of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over ticket distribution in Jabalpur and called it «unfortunate». Union Minister Patel said, «The incident that occurred in Jabalpur is condemnable...It is unfortunate and shameful...» The angry protest by BJP workers started after the party on Saturday released its fifth list of 92 candidates for Madhya Pradesh assembly polls. Prominent names in the latest list include Madhya Pradesh ministers Usha Thakur and Mahendra Singh Sisodiya and Mousam Bisen, who is the daughter of minister Gaurishankar Bisen. Former ministers Jayant Kumar Malaiya, and Antar Singh Arya have been given tickets. Siddharth Tiwari and Sachin Birla, who recently joined the BJP, after resigning from Congress, figure in the list. Party leaders Yoshodhara Raje Scindia, Gauri Shankar Bisen, and OPS Bhadoria, a Jyotiraditya Scindia loyalist, are not among the party candidates. BJP has now declared the names of 228 candidates for 230 seats. The party is yet to declare candidates for Guna (Scheduled Caste) and Vidisha seats. The BJP earlier announced a total of 136 candidates in its four lists — 39 candidates each in the first and second lists, a single name in the third list, and 57 candidates in the fourth list. The second list contained the names of three Union Ministers and four MPs. Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Singh Patel have been fielded from the Dimand Narsinghpur constituencies respectively.

Stock pickers sidelined with world events overshadowing earnings
Earnings season typically is the time when investors can look past macroeconomic forces and focus on company-specific news moving stocks. This quarter, however, is turning out to be anything but typical. Individual shares have, of course, reacted to earnings announcements in the week or so since Corporate America started reporting results. But conflict in the Middle East and surging Treasury yields are taking precedence, causing S&P 500 Index constituents to increasingly move in unison as global events sway markets broadly. In four of the six trading sessions since the reporting cycle kicked off on Oct. 13, at least 400 members in the S&P 500 have moved in the same direction. It’s a frequency that didn’t appear once in comparable weeks the past three earnings periods. Such concerted moves — up and down — are further complicating the lives of stock pickers in a year when they’ve had little luck, with only 37% of large-cap active managers outperforming their benchmarks as of the end of September, data compiled by Bank of America Corp. show. “Macro is dominating the narrative again,” Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, said by phone. “The situation in the Middle East obviously weighs on sentiment.”
