MUMBAI : Private sector lender IDBI Bank was able to restrict its net non-performing asset ratio to less than 0.5% in the three months through June, aided by a strategy to aggressively set aside provisions. The bank’s net NPAs stood at 0.44% of net advances as on 30 June, down 48 basis points (bps) from the previous quarter. Its gross bad loans were at 5.05% in the June quarter, as against 6.38% in the March quarter.

Digital Strategy LSE Experts seek to find ways to bridge digital divide in India
digital skills and contribution of digital engagement in governance were among the key aspects discussed by experts on Monday as they sought to find ways to bridge the digital divide in India. The deliberations were held at a symposium — Digital Inclusion and Empowerment in India — as part of the India chapter of DiSTO (From Digital Skills to Tangible Outcomes) project. It was organised here by Policy and Development Advisory Group (PDAG)-Delhi and the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). «India's digital transformation journey is possible when the prevalent digital inequalities are bridged through large-scale digital inclusion initiatives,» Arindam Banerjee, Co-founder and Partner at PDAG, said after the conclusion of the first day of the two-day event. On the importance of the symposium, Ellen Helsper, professor of Digital Inequalities at LSE, said that it aims at understanding digital inequalities and inclusion as well as the contribution of digital engagement in governance, socio-economic and civic activities. «Bringing together existing knowledge and best practice and identifying where more work is needed is key to supporting different stakeholders in creating a more equal digital future for India,» she said.

Supreme Court Monday warned the states, which are yet to submit their response to the Centre on forming a uniform national policy on menstrual hygiene for girls studying in schools, it will take recourse to the «coercive arm of law» if they failed to do so by August 31. The warning came after the Centre informed the apex court it has so far received the response of only four states. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud directed the states and Union Territories (UTs), which have failed to submit their responses, to do so positively by August 31. «The states which are in default are placed on notice that should there be any further default, this court will be constrained to take recourse to the coercive arm of law,» said the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, told the bench the central government has so far received inputs from only four states — Haryana, Delhi, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The apex court had on April 10 asked the Centre to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) and formulate a national model to be adopted by all states and UTs for managing the menstrual hygiene of girls studying in schools.

Platform Strategy country Consumers prefer mid-sized packs instead of value packs this quarter
Multi-use, mid-sized packs in categories such as confectionery, personal care and home care products witnessed a higher uptake in the June quarter of 2023, as per data from Bizom, a retail intelligence platform. In confectionery, mid-priced packs grew 2. 5 per cent during the quarter, while the growth in high-value packs in the same category declined by an equal proportion. Consumers clearly preferred mid-priced packs in personal care goods grew by three per cent, while low-priced packs declined by 3. 4 per cent. In home care, mid-priced packs rose 7. 1 per cent, as consumers upgraded from low-price packs which saw a fall of 6. 8 per cent, thus driving growth in this category. “Consumers seem to be looking for greater value among confectionery, personal care as well as home care products. Here we see a strong movement into multiuse, mid-sized packs that offer the flexibility of limited spending and greater value than smaller-sized ones, ” Bizom’s chief of growth and insights, Akshay D’Souza, said to TOI.
