Ivy League whisperers: Why high-end education consultants are in huge demand from Delhi to Dhanbad
students, dreaming of Harvard and Yale, with parents in tow, step into a rather unimpressive building nearby. They come from as far as Amritsar, Dhanbad and Delhi. They make their way to the sixth floor where an amiable-looking, grey-haired, bespectacled man waits for them in his three-room office. Viral Doshi, they believe, has the key to their favourite undergraduate destination—the Ivy League. The kids are often just 14 years old. When they are in Class IX, they come to Doshi, one of the most sought-after consultants for US college admissions in India, to entrust their next four years to him. These years will be spent in crafting a student life that will tick all the boxes in an application form to a top American college. Doshi’s four-year package costs anywhere between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 7 lakh. “Applying to universities is not a cookie-cutter process,” says Doshi. “Each application requires a lot of time and attention to detail as a kid’s career is at stake.” He starts by getting to know a student—their favourite subjects and interests. He puts them to a psychometric analysis to crosscheck their strengths and weaknesses. He then sits them down and advises on areas they should focus on and maps out a possible career path.

Books pulled from B.C. district curriculum in what premier calls ‘crazy decision’
Surrey School District has quietly pulled four books from the reading curriculum for students in Grade 10 and above due to concerns about controversial themes. In November 2023, a panel of 12 teachers decided to pull the books from the recommended reading curriculum. The books will still be available in the library and teachers can apply to teach them, but they won’t be part of the recommended reading lists. The four books are: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie and In the Heat of the Night by John Ball.Ritinder Matthew, the communications officer for the Surrey School District, told Global News on Thursday that the review of these four books began more than a year ago after feedback from parents and others in the community.“We received a lot of feedback from families of students not feeling safe in the classroom when these resources were used,” she said.Using To Kill a Mockingbird as an example, Matthew said the review found the “portrayal of Black characters as one-dimensional, the use of the white saviour trope, the use of ableist language, the use of the N-word, noting it’s normalized in the text and not necessarily used as a slur, but often as another word for Black people.

I-banks at the IIMs drop an optimistic note on India’s economy
MUMBAI : For a sure sign that domestic dealmaking is picking up in India, as is the economy, turn to the recruitment scene at the country’s premier management schools. Investment banks and private equity firms are handing out more domestic postings than international gigs to graduating students of the Indian Institutes of Management, in a sign that the persistent funding winter perhaps is finally thawing. Large domestic as well as global firms including DE Shaw, Goldman Sachs and Premji Invest are hiring graduates for functions across wealth management, institutional equities, asset management and investment banking profiles.

Centre raises concern about 5 states not signing PM SHRI School MoU
Centre has expressed strong concerns about five states not signing MoUs with the education ministry for PM SHRI schools and Punjab not implementing it despite continuing to take funds under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, sources said on Thursday. Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Delhi have not yet signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Ministry of Education, while 30 states and union territories (UTs) have done so. The scheme targets to upgrade 14,500 schools and is expected to benefit 1.8 million students. It also aims to ensure these schools serve as model institutes and encapsulate the spirit of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The government has already selected 6,448 schools from 28 states and UTs for the upgrade in the first round.

The “eyes” have it: IISc study finds eye movements & attention are closely linked
attention and eye movements are linked, while unveiling how the brain coordinates the two processes. Attention is a unique phenomenon that allows us to focus on a specific object in our visual world, and ignore distractions. When we pay attention to an object, we tend to gaze towards it. Therefore, scientists have long suspected that attention is tightly coupled to rapid eye movements, called saccades. In fact, even before our eyes move towards an object, our attention focuses on it, allowing us to perceive it more clearly – a well-known phenomenon called pre-saccadic attention, IISc said in a press release. However, in a new study published in PLOS Biology, the researchers at CNS show that this perceptual advantage is lost when the object changes suddenly, a split second before our gaze falls upon it, making it harder for us to process what changed.

Phone number spoofing: How to stop this?
Phone spoofing, also referred to as caller ID spoofing, is a tactic employed by scammers to deceive individuals into picking up their calls. Through the utilization of software or hardware, scammers manipulate the caller ID to display a different number, often one that belongs to an unsuspecting individual. This fraudulent practice poses challenges for both the legitimate owner of the spoofed number and the unsuspecting recipients of the scam calls, as per a Fox report. If one suspects that his/her phone number has been spoofed, there are steps user can take to address the situation before it escalates. First, assess whether your phone number has indeed been spoofed. Next, investigate how scammers gained access to your phone number. If your number has already been spoofed, follow specific steps to mitigate the impact. Finally, take measures to prevent scammers from spoofing your phone number in the future.
