Winter storm hits Northeast, causing difficult driving, closed schools and canceled flights
snowstorm hit the Northeast on Tuesday canceling and delaying flights, making roads slippery and prompting many school districts to cancel classes or switch to remote learning —- or at least try to switch. In New York City, the online learning system that serves the nation’s largest school district experienced technical problems first thing in the morning, preventing many of the 915,000 students from logging in. More than 1,000 flights were canceled Tuesday morning, mostly at the airports in the New York City area and in Boston.

Assam's 'disease' is population: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday asserted in the Assembly that high population is a «disease» for the state, which impacts its performance in various parameters. He also maintained that the state's poor performance in a nationwide cleanliness survey «is a reflection on the people as a whole rather than the government», as he pitched for a 'proper citizens' movement'. Taking part in a discussion on the state Budget, Sarma said the state's performance in terms of percentage cannot be compared with Arunachal Pradesh or Meghalaya, which have a much lower population than Assam. «Our population burden affects our performance in terms of percentage. Population vis-a-vis students determine the percentage», he said, referring to opposition Congress MLA Bharat Chandra Narah pointing out that Assam's gross enrolment ratio (GER) was much less than the national average.

Tripura CM Manik Saha resolves Kokborok Roman Script issue, protestors withdraw road, rail blockade
Manik Saha has successfully navigated a major crisis that saw the state's critical transportation arteries blocked by supporters of the TISF, a student wing of the opposition TIPRA MOTHA party. The blockades, which targeted key national highways and railway lines, effectively isolated Tripura, causing widespread disruption and anxiety among its citizens. The blockades were an escalation of a longstanding demand by the TISF and another wing, the Twipra Students' Federation (TSF), for the recognition of the Roman script for the Kokborok language in educational assessments. This demand, rooted in a 17-year struggle for linguistic recognition, recently gained momentum following statements by Dhananjoy Gon Choudhury, President of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education.

It’s time for a broad transition from quantity to quality
India’s 18th Lok Sabha elections will be held in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024-25. One of the major campaign planks that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has adopted is the aspiration of a “viksit" or developed India by 2047. A developed country is widely understood as one that is industrialized, has a high Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, scores well on human development indicators and has institutions of quality.
